Financing Opinions

I’m not one to ask for money. In fact, I don’t really need extra money to keep this site running, yet. As it is now RavingAtheists.com costs $68 a year. However, server space isn’t free. Currently the site has 1200mb of space, here’s how that breaks down:

Disk Space Usage 71.57Mb
MySQL Disk Space 367.98Mb
Disk space available 760.45Mb

Now, I predict that in 6 months, this site will need more space. Primarily because the forum has a huge database and a lot of users. More space will increase the yearly cost from $68 to $115 (hosting+domain registration). This site is currently hosted with Total Choice Hosting on the Silver Plan. You can see their plans here. (I don’t pay the yearly price.)

My question is; What should be done about the finances? I want to insure that this site is around for years to come. I thought about ads, but I hate ads. The best answer is donations, probably through PayPal. What do you think? Have any ideas?

I HATE spam, the meat and the internet kind. So… I have activated the Akismet spam filter for all the blogs. You may check your comment spam by going to the Comments tab > Akismet Spam.

Mistake While Registering

“I made a mistake in my blog name, can you change it?”

Yes. Everything can be changed by the Admin. Your username, your blog address, password, email address and so on. Please email the Admin for assistance (admin [@] ravingatheists.com).

User Names Lowercase

“I registered the username “BobJones” but it’s not capitalized, it’s showing as “bobjones”. How can I fix this?”

You can’t.

Your login and your URL (ravingatheists.com/blog/bobjones) must be lowercase. You can however change your ‘display name’. In your admin panel go to Users->Your Profile. Edit your first name, last name or nick name and click the “Update Profile” button. After you’ve updated, make a new selection from the “Display name publicly as: ” drop down and click the “Update Profile” button again.

Yes, to import, login to your admin panel go to Manage->Import. Setect the type of blog you’re trying to import and follow the on screen instructions.

Turn Off Smilies

Go to your admin panel Options->Writing In the “Formatting” section, uncheck the box for “Convert emoticons like -) and -P to graphics on display”. Please see the WordPress Codex for more smilies options.

Comment Options

In the admin panel go to Options->Discussion and uncheck “An administrator must always approve the comment”.

What’s Going On Here?

What’s going on is a new domain and a new place for the forum users of the RavingAtheist.com Forum. There will be more information in the future but for now what you need to know is the forum will be moving (I’ll announce the when in the future) and there will be a place for the forum users and new users to start their own blogs.

First, I want to dispel any nasty rumors: I am not defecting from RA’s site. Nor is it my intention to convince people not visit his site. The forum is and always has been my personal project. What I’d like to do here is create a community around the users, not around the RA blog but keeping in mind what originally brought us all together, hence the domain name.

Second, a time line, I am an extremely busy individual. I am hardly able at this time to nail down a deadline of any kind. The forum will be moved sooner then the blogs will be ready. There will be announcements made both here and on the current forum.

Last, what I need is a few volunteer testers. You need to have some general knowledge about the web and how websites and blogs work. Knowledge of WordPress and php are a plus but not necessary. The pay is low, in fact it’s none. I’m a perfectionist and care little about your feelings or patting you on the head.
