EUTHANASIA SHOULD BE LEGAL

October 23rd, 2006

This is my personal thought about euthanasia. I think that we all have the right to end our lives when we feel that it has become physically too painful to stay alive.Of course, religious freaks think they are always pro life, and they are so narrow minded they don’t see beyond. They don’t take in consideration the individual needs, dignity and rights.
Some fellow Atheists might be against euthanasia also but for very different reasons than religion, and if this is the case I’d like to hear about them.
There are several diseases for which there are no cure so far, and those can take the human body to the end in so much pain that one’s dignity can totally vanish.

Personally, if I ever get a terminal illness, I’d like to end my life with dignity and peace. Of course, I’d choose euthanasia after I’d tried everything possible to stay alive and well. And when that becomes unbearable I’d like to put an end to that through euthanasia, in a legal way, without having to call it suicide.
What’s your opinion?

Although I wholeheartedly agree with the idea of euthanasia, I am cautious about its implementation. A society must be careful about how it goes about allowing people to make the one choice that is truly irrevocable. Momentary (and not so transient) situational changes and pressures can alter someone’s outlook, and they can choose a path that they otherwise would eschew. I think that I think that the issue can only be resolved on a case-by-case basis, and any blanket approval or disapproval should be dismissed.

Absolutely. My sister is only 29 years old, on 1 duragesic patch every 2 days, subsisting on baby food and soups, with no hope of getting a pancreas transplant. She hasn’t left her apartment since she moved in 2 months ago. She is dying. And there’s no comfort no choice, no dignity in it. I don’t know if she would ever choose euthanasia for herself, even if the option was there. She should have the choice, though. Her biggest fear is dying suddenly while her son is visiting her. I can’t imagine living with that fear.

First of all, I am sorry guys I didn’t “approve” your comments earlier. I really don’t want these feature on in my blog of approving comments. I’ve tried to disable it so everybody can post here whatever they want to say.
I’ll try to disable it again.

Second of all, I appreciate your comments. It is true that euthanasia should be legal and resolved in a case by case basis. It’s so important that we take that in consideration instead of wasting our money and time in futile wars.

I love life and I expect, near the end, to be very disappointed that it did not last much longer. That said, I contend that, if society has no right to dictate which breakfast cereal I eat, it has no right to dictate whether I will end my life or not. Given the difference between suicide and euthanasia is that the former is self administered, I closely agree with you on euthanasia issues, but I think that suicide, even if some people think the reasons for it are not adequate, must be just as easy for an free, adult, sovereign human as purchasing and ingesting breakfast cereal.
It is not for anyone else to say that pulling one’s own plug is not permissible if one only has a temporary or fleeting depression.
Despite my somber post, be of good cheer.
