Amazing.

I just watched as the prey were eaten to the brink of extinction, until a small population of high-defense individuals began to replicate. The predators were unable to consume them, and were themselves made extinct.

Keep trying. Did you allow them to mutate? I had much fun with this last night; several times I reached a stable population.

Good stuff. At one point, I had a clump of predators in the center, with the prey concentrated on the edges. The predators would swim to one side for a few cycles, then turn around and swim towards the other. (I think the predator's instructions are basically "Swim one way for about 10 cycles, and if you don't find any prey, pick a different direction.") This allowed the prey to mutate more low-defense models. Eventually, I had a pretty even distribution of defenses, around 20 organisms per defense value. The predators responded by mutating models with lower aggression, which also increased their speed, and allowed them to get to the prey concentrated at the edges within 10 cycles. At that point, both sides started mutating like crazy towards their high defense/aggression ratings.

It's interesting to note that very few populations are sustainable unless you turn on the mutations, since in most cases the predators will eat themselves into extinction. If this simulator is any indication, life itself would not be possible without evolution!
