You'd think God would be able to do something about all the mistranslating that's going on. How about a magic book that when someone opens it up it's in whatever language they read or moving pictures if they're illiterate. No need to interpret what god might mean.

Sorry, no can do. Omnipotent gods like to play the you-must-be-devout-to-read-the-scripture-correctly card. :vomit:

Hm... I've got mixed feelings. I'm, of course, pro-gay rights; but I'm also pro-reason; and I kinda doubt that the story of the centurion had anything to do with homosexuality.

That's why I kind of get irritated with gay Christians looking desperately for some sort of validation in the bible -- it's really a lost cause.

my dear wife --a borderline beleiver--lutheran--had this to say to the Jehovas Witness at the door last week...

" I'd rather burn in hell with all of my gay friends than get to heaven with all of you."

The response as the witness slinked away was," everyone has the right to choose.."

Her response to that was--" except pregnant women according to you."

I need to meet a woman like that...

I feel bad for people who are indoctrinated as christian their entire lives, who then come to realize they are gay. These people are grasping at straws trying to reconcile what they know about themselves, with the b.s. they've been taught to believe that totally condemns who they are. I'm sure the strongest-minded among them eventually see past the deception of christianity and get out of the church entirely, but some people really need to feel like they belong somewhere, and that's what they've staked their emotional claim on. It can be hard to let go.

By the way, I looked up the verse on the billboard:

When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. "Lord," he said, "my servant lies at home paralyzed and in terrible suffering."

Jesus said to him, "I will go and heal him."

The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it."

When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. I say to you that many will come from the east and the west, and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

Then Jesus said to the centurion, "Go! It will be done just as you believed it would." And his servant was healed at that very hour.
How exactly is that affirming a gay couple? I'm not saying that the homophobes messing with the billboards aren't full of shit, though, but those billboarders should at least get their verses right.

Some gay (and straight) Christians claim that the man Jesus healed in the story was the Centurion's lover, not his servant.

Some gay (and straight) Christians claim that the man Jesus healed in the story was the Centurion's lover, not his servant.
And on what do they base their interpretation? Do you know?

And I'm wondering if I care. THe lengths that people will go to deceive themselves when a solitary document is their only souce of morality can be nauseating.

I've often wondered about that myself, actually, but never got around to researching.

Anyone else know?

This is from one of the talkbacks

Its the greek word he uses to describe his male servant that is at home dying. Pais, indicates a special male servant. It was his lover. Jesus was more concerned with the mans faith than the particulars of his relationship. Jesus is more concerned with the condition of heart than who we love.
Not sure about this

Well, you're a very cool dad to take her out for dinner.

I remember one of my birthdays. My dad took me to the movies. He gave me twenty bucks and said, "I'll pick you up in two hours."

I take my kids to the movies quite a bit as well, but I actually see it with them... I'm just glad their tastes have matured a little as they've gotten older. We're going to see 'Spider Man 3' next weekend, I'm looking forward to it. (I said their tastes have matured, not that mine have!)

Dude, Spiderman is one of the smarter main-stream movies out there. I don't know how old you are, but I'm feeling very comfortable at the movies now that my generation is moving in. I think this must be way old people always hearkening back to the days, "Remember when movies were about things we cared about? Like fighting the nazis?"

I have some teenage friends-of-the-family. When I'm eating dinner with them, they're always quoting these incredibly unfunny lines, then telling me what movie it's from, then telling me what was happening in the scene, and then saying what the character said again, than laughing hysterically, then telling me I have to see the movie, because it was really funny. Young adolescents are weird.

Yeah, I have to agree with you, and we're probably in the same generation-range. I'm old enough that all 3 of my kids are teenagers now, and their weirdness for the most part mirrors mine, so I'm ok with that. I'm pretty happy with their developing tastes in movies and books, and they're doing well when it comes to thinking for themselves. I have at least some hope for the future...
