Hi! I clicked over from Pharyngula. (Read it multiple times a day, but I've never commented there. Way too shy. Sorry PZ!) I'm kind of shy, so I may wind up mostly lurking, but I'll try to annoy you all with posts. :D

Nice place you got here, I've been enjoying the threads so far.

This intro message is way too long!

Welcome Ninja Penguin!

Can we assume from your screen name that you are an expert in Linux?

I don't think I can honestly call myself an expert yet, but I'm definitely aspiring to be one.

Mostly, I just like penguins. And ninjas. (But also pirates!) And also *nixes.

Wonderful. Me too, though I'm sure you're farther along than I. I may be picking your brain soon. :)

Cool, nice to know there are people gaining interest in quality operating systems.

I mess with linux at home occasionally, and we are moving over to Red Hat servers at work (still too many :( SCO servers remain though, never thought I'd meet a *nix I didn't like). But for the past couple of years I've been a FreeBSD (with KDE) junkie. Feel free to pick my brain as well.

Thank you clambake! I'm embarrassed to say this, but one of my biggest problems is installing new software on top of KDE....like right now I'm wrestling with Java.

I just found out yesterday that the local Linux Users group is having their monthly Installfest in two weeks, so I'm planning to lug my machine down there and get some help.

I need someone that will sit next to me and say "Now push that key. VERY GOOD." and then pop a Scooby snack in my mouth.

Its fun though. I never get tired of poking around in my machine.

Rhinoqulous, Drunkmonkey is right (http://ravingatheists.com/forum/showpost.php?p=440387&postcount=104). You people are a dangerous cult of theists that lure new members with aestheticly appealing shaped machinery that discourages questions...like, "Why the f@#* isn't this working?"

My place of work uses mostly Solaris 8 (barf), 9 (gurgle), and recently 10 (oooh, shiny - wow look, GNU utilities! You can tar [x|c]zvf! DUDE!) with some RHEL. Fedora Core, OS X and OpenBSD rock my home *nixing world, though. And Wine is so good these days that you can play practically anything in Linux. I just don't understand anymore why people will an OS that'll revoke your ability to use your DVD drive if some kid in Sweden hacks the key, given how far *nix has come.

*nix is fun. Part of what made me crazy about Apple until X is that the damn OS held your hand and there was no ability to tinker under the covers (wow, that sounds unexpectedly dirty). What distro are you using? Not all are created equal in terms of being able to readily learn how to do stuff like install Java. I too extend my willingness to be brain-picked, for what little it may be worth, and to provide Scooby snacks.

I have a love-hate relationship with Apple. The cult stuff is moderately amusing/somewhat disturbing, but since it's not dictating things like "kill the infidel PC users" a la a real religion, it registers somewhere around Buddhism on my theist-meter. Besides, at least they're worshiping something that can be proven to exist, they've got a leg up on other religions there. :P

On the one hand, Apple infuriates me with bull-headed, detached-from-reality decisions and thinking. On the other hand, that is one damn slick product they're selling; nicely designed, fairly well engineered, slick, usable and now tinkerable, and with the bonus of BSD under the covers (there's that term again). They've come a long way in my esteem since the dark days of Classic.

Why yes, I am a giant nerd. However did you tell?

Hey, call me crazy, but I like having a computer that actually works right out of the box instead of having to haul it to some nerd convention every few months so gimpshop and open office actually do what they're supposed to.

Thank you Ninja Penguin. When I get home I will try to figure out a way to articulate the issue beyond a baleful moan. The thing is, when YAST installs something, I can't figure out where the files go.

That is true but it made me laugh. Did you ever see that South Park where Timmy is trying to get rid of Jimmy?

oh ya, I just luuurve my iPod which is designed so that I'll have to buy a whole new one when the battery stops charging...which I'm told will likely only be a year.

and I'd like to murder whoever came up with "iLife" and M4Ps.

fuck Apple.

Look around the WEB, there are sites showing how to pry the little bugger apart and put in all kinds of innards- batteries, even the hard drive- by yourself, yet. I bought an ipod 2 years ago, and so far it works fine. Except for once, when it lost its entire tiny little mind, and the other time when ALL the music disappeared. Oh, and the time...well you get the idea. But, it can still be handled.

iLife I don't have anything directly helpful for, but this comic might make you feel better:

You really shouldn't have to void the warranty/Google for console mod-esque directions to change the dead battery in your $200+ MP3 player. This = lousy design decision.

You'll get no argument from me on that score. ANY machine is going to need fixing at some point in its life. Apple just thinks their shit is cute when you have to break it to fix it. I have yet to open the hood on my ipod. Just lucky, I guess, but it spends a lot of time padded in my backpack, and I don't think I've ever dropped it. That sudden stop on reaching the floor jacks the goodies pretty badly.
