Just wandered in cause I thought it was a free BBQ with no security and an open keg. Lemme help you tap that bastard mate. Yep!! I am an Aussie trooper too.
But... actualy I found this place by googling for "moral philosophy sexism racism" and after browsing numerous blogs I found a link to A Raving Athiest forum that featured a Q'n'A session with PZ. Myers. So first up!! Thanks for an hour or so of blissfull reading. I like the cut of that fellers jib. :rock:
I became an athiest shortly after learning to walk, distinguish between more than the three primary colours, and learning to spell my first name. The idea of a hyper-complex being creating and controlling everything we know to be reality seemed supurfluous right from the beginning for me.
I do remember the self-concious flirtation with the deistsic creator in my early teenage years, and to me, It remains an artifact of social acceptance. Perhaps even more, wanting to belive in the "Gentle Jesus" saviour figure and the life herafter, but I am pleased to say that I never realy swollowed the whole pill. I actualy gagged on it and spit it up. :vomit:
In my later teens and early 20's I became a hedonist, who couldn't give a rats bum, about such worldly things as why we are here and how the universe began. Eventualy I became co-dependant on the 'geek within' who made me read books about cosmology and natural history.
I walked many years with the writtings of Stephen Jay Gould, and read the cosmologies of Paul Davis too. (I once went to the Adelaide University with an amaturish, crackpot theory about quantum mechanics, and shook his hand.) I have read James Gliek's Chaos and by the same author Genius - Richard Feynman And Modern Physics, In Seach Of The Double Helix (John Gribbin) and many many mode. Some how against the greatest odds, as an uneducated suburban 'yobbo' I have I have turned a love of nature and a respect and admiration for science into a lifes passion.
I still sometimes struggle for an outlet for that passion. As yet I have no academic qualifications, but yet I dream of contributing to a deeper understanding of life and the universe as we might yet come to know it. I consider it a far greater legasy than increasing the population.
For the best part of two decades, I have been an avid skeptic and athiest. In recent years I have been active on the brights forum and more recently I spent a couple of months as the principal administrator on the Richard Dawkins Foundation (RDF) when it first started. I went to study for a while and then remained unemployed (and off the internet) untill now.
At the moment I am driving a courier van and looking foward to better days. :D
That's enough of my life story. Besides, I have run out of beer. It's good to see an alternative site for athiests on the net, so keep up the good work huh? I thought I knew every skeptic and athiest forum that exists, but as they say "the more the merrier". Speak to you soon.
