Since that's usually what religious people do, but then people get together to paint nails and play sports too, so what the hell. Saw this forum on the doc "The God Who Wasn't There." I was "saved" from religion four years ago when I realized I just felt stupid praying.

I see it as more an ongoing argument that you can drop in and out of than a community in the theist sense. Actually getting the RAs to agree on anything is like herding cats.

Which is probably as it should be.

What, we're featured in that documentary? I didn't catch that!

welcome to our humble forum, ema!

skribb, in the documentary, brian fleming interviews the raving atheist. so it is not a direct mention of our forum, really. we have somewhat spilt from him and we also added an "s", as in raving atheistS.
also, he no longer blogs....

Yeah, at the end of the credits. And there wasn't any really any news saying to me there's no god, I just quit believing because I felt stupid.

That's not us. That's The Raving Atheist, a former blogger (and former atheist?) from whose site these forums were spawned.

He does some commentary in the special features of the DVD.

I think the original RA is still atheist, but his wife/family have become more religious, and he's taken a more "tolerant" stance on religion than his former raving.

A sign of rational thinking.

Welcome.

Yeah, I can see how you could feel pretty stupid praying. I've never believed in any god at all, not in my whole life. So I never prayed. Not even when I was a kid, since I was never exposed to religion until I encountered it in school when I was in the third grade, and quickly realized it was bullshit.

Kate, what do cats do when another cat comes in and shits all over their little box? Does it make them into angry pussies? And then do they rip its little ears off and kick its furry ass?

What do you find so odd about it? There are all kinds of communities on the World Wide Web whose members are loosely affiliated by common interest or predicament.

What in the world would bring atheists together on an Internet forum, you ask? Well, for one, the fact that atheists neither believe in nor worship imaginary deities when this runs counter to the prevailing belief systems of a majority of the folk they encounter on a daily basis in the real-life communities in which they live. Given their obvious outsider status in the nonvirtual world, who do you suggest would need a sense of community more than atheists?

Would it be preferable to you if we just chose to ignore each other, suffer in silence and pretend we don't exist? That would seem odd to me.

Really? So only Christians are allowed congregate? Since when? The human animal has been congregatin' since long before Christianity was invented. Similar type folks like being with each, whether it's for the purpose of worshipping a shared imaginary deity, enjoying a particular punk rock band whose musical aesthetics appeal to us, experiencing a horror movie that gives each of us a similar thrill or just to commiserate over things that collectively piss us off. Again, what is so odd to you about this?

Nothing odd to me. At least we don't get burned at the stake for it anymore.
