View Full Version : Greetings from the frozen north

I'm a yooper, stranded in a veritable sea of Xian madness...And snow. Lots of snow. So when I'm not out snowboarding and the like, I meander the internet (I'm at a tech university), and this looked like a pretty cool place to frequent.
I've been an atheist for about 10 years now (since roundabout 13 years old), and was raised Catholic in downstate Michigan :vomit:. Now I'm way up north, studying materials engineering, and getting ready for graduation. The outdoor conservative life here draws a significant number of religious folk to the area, and as such, atheists are surprisingly few and far between for a college campus. Kind of hard to meet like-minded folks and vent. So here I am.

Yo. What's a yooper? It's aboot 60 F outside here right now, in southern California. Welcome! I hope your membership somehow cancels out the likes of that e-poopery from that kup-fer guy.

A yooper is someone who hails from the Upper Peninsula. They're a strange breed, and that's coming from someone who hails from a different part of the frozen north (but hey, it's 15 above today! that's practically shorts weather!).
welcome to our humble forum, marsto!

It's actually pretty balmy up here as well (11 degrees where I'm at right now)...We've been having a relatively snow-free winter for a change. According to our weather station's snow data, we've only had 145 inches to date...A typical winter brings 250+ inches. But eh, we always have ourselves a St. Patty's Day blizzard, so there's plenty of snow yet to fall.

Welcome marstosirius, here is another fellow Michigander. Just curious, mind if you reveal what led you to atheism?

I was raised Catholic (including Catholic academy)...And because of the whole work ethic that was beat into me, I took reading the scripture seriously...And around the age of 13 (about the point that I could actually comprehend what I was reading) the light bulb went on.

All hail and praise Mr. Edison, a demi-god if there ever was one (and, no, there never was).

Of course I didn't mean a fake demi-god, I meant a real fake demi-god.;)

Wouldn't you really prefer a hemi-demi-semi-formal puce sort of god? The kind that ride astride a Bolo Stupendous? Sterny and I may be the only members of the forum to get this- it's rather esoteric.

Hi! :hand:
Hopefully our warm atheist hearts will make you feel snug and cozy. Just don't get too cozy and watch who you get snuggly with. One wrong move around here and it is a one way ticket on the Stanley Steamer express - coming round the bend, straight into the tunnel of Jesus, chugga, chugga, if you know what I mean, Vern! :\
