Hello. I have been an atheist all of my adult life.
My story is fairly boring. It can be summed up as: tooth fairy, easter bunny, Santa Claus, god. I decided this religion stuff was rubbish when I was 12 and have never looked back (only a juvenile theist, never an adult offender).
For years I truly believed that the church and religion thing was just an elaborate ruse to keep kids happy and to reduce their fear of death. One that all adults were in on, like Santa Claus. Only slowly did I come to realize that I was only partially right, that actually it was an elaborate ruse to keep kids and adults with stunted reasoning skills happy and to reduce their fear of death.
Never would have thought to join an atheist forum before, since I considered theists to be benign and fairly harmless. After 9/11 and 7 7 it is hard to maintain that attitude. My son was walking into London's Warren Street station on 21 July as the police started to block it off after finding the bomb (which didn't go off).
I live in Atlanta GA, US. I am 57 years old. I was an electrical engineer but I have ALS, (Lou Gerig's disease - ala Stephan Hawking) can't work and neo-poor.
