I'm so glad to have finally found a website like this where I can reasonably discuss religion without being verbally (and sometimes physically) shut down:silenced:.

Here's a little background: I'm a young, blonde, girly girl trying to make her way in the USA (YIKES! I sound like a preview for a cheap movie....moving on)...

I live in Colorado, which I'm not positive is considered "bible-belt" territory, but we're home to a large sector of Evangelical Christians (which I don't believe is something to be proud of :() and have quite the share of Catholics and Jehovahs.

I'm lucky to say my parents "raised me right" from the very beginning and never dragged me to church. While I've wanted to believe in a mystical, higher power through out my life, I recently resolved that I simply cannot. There is overwhelming proof against god cited on this forum, and in documents elsewhere. Besides, it would be against my own true morality to worship a being that has let its creatures suffer (animal cruelty, diseases, countless murders, genocides, the Darfur crisis, the Holocaust....and the list goes on and on).

Of course, nearly half the people I know would love to convert me to Christianity. My best friend is a god-fearing, whitebread Catholic (I know...how exactly DID we become friends?) and even took me to church once. I went, to humor her, and to see just how idiotic and ignorant the preachers/followers were. And ooooh did the ignorance Fa-Ly!

Sorry to ramble on, but the point is I'm an atheist for good, yet cannot tell many in my life, for fear of losing otherwise loving friendships and family connections. Therefore, I'll say it once again: I'm SO HAPPY TO BE AT THIS FORUM!!!!:)

Whenever someone on an Intertubes forum describes herself as a "young, blonde girl," I can't help but picture this guy:

But I'm sure that, unlike Jesus, you are who you say you are, 1seek. Welcome and prepare for the wurst.

Well, Philboid,
I don't think there is any substantial way I could prove I'm just a bit more attractive than that guy you just posted, because it's easy to fake anything now a days. For all you know I could be a serial rapist/murderer/drug traffiker! You could be as well! However, I doubt that you, or any serious atheist on here is. You hear about pope-mollestations all the time....but how often do you hear about atheist mollestations? Not often...
Anyway, thanks for the welcoming comments everyone. And Ghoulslime, that's quite the priceless picture. Where was that taken, and which one is your wife (don't tell me you have more than one?! :naughty: teeheheeeheee...)

A hearty welcome to you. Your first post was substantial but hardly too long for my taste.

I think that being closed-minded is not a good thing from either side of the religious issue. It is a kind of blindness that is self-inflicted. For me, I want to see and consider any evidence for or against the existence of god. I will not reject anything out of hand and I am confident that nothing too contrary to all that has gone before will appear. Truth will win out.

Wise words, Sternwallow! I agree completely...
Being closed-minded is, one of the worst traits a person can have, especially when they're trying to debate others.

This is actually something I've been trying to work on for a long time now. I get frusterated easily, but know it's best to see both sides of an issue before forming a solid opinion. Even then, there should always be room to change one's mind...

EXCEPT of course when I'm debating my doctor about how much chocolate I should be aloud to have. In this case, my opinion is FINAL!!! UNLIMITED AMOUNTS!!! WEEEEEE!!!!

P.S, I guess the universal opinion is that my first post wasn't too long at all. Good! I'm just so used to being kicked off e-mail lists and forums for legnthy posts and replies. Now I really feel welcome !

Welcome indeed from a long-time windbag.

In your quest for open mindedness, don't forget that there may well be more than two sides to a question. As a reminder of this important fact, I used to have a vinyl record with three sides.
