Oddly enough, like christians, I'm also interested in leading people to the truth, although the truth I'm interested in I'm going to list under differences.

I'm willing to vehmently defend my worldview

Differences--

I don't believe in god (the truth I'm interested in).

I believe in science as the way to arrive at absolute truths.

I don't believe any one piece of literature or human being (Jesus, the Pope) is completely infalliable. Social and cultural bias is unavoidable.

I don't base my worldview on the assumption that life is forever

I believe that homosexuality (and anything else involving consenting adults) is just fine.


Satan (leaning heavily on CS Lewis and Milton's interpretation, since the bible doesn't have much descriptor on satan's inner thoughts)

Similarities--

Always interested in making the best of a bad situation
("better to reign in hell, than serve in heav'n." from Milton's Paradise Lost),

more interested in being completely free of any punitive god ("free, and to none accountable, preferring hard liberty before the easy yoke of servile pomp." also Milton)

We agree that god, if s/he does exist, has got her priorities all screwed up.

If this is correct, how do we know that Satan didn't create Jesus and the entire New Testament?

It seems to me that if you wanted millions of people to go to hell, the best way to do that would be to give them a fake Christ many many years before the actual Christ showed up and then write the book of Revelations in such a way that people won't believe it when the real Christ showed up. This way, since people believe that Christ has already come and gone, and they have predictive texts that say another "false" Christ is going to show up, they will disbelieve and hate the real thing.

If Satan is really that good at deception, you wouldn't be able to differentiate books in the bible written on god's inspiration from those written on satan's inspiration.

If God is all of those things that you say He is then why doesn’t he just get rid of Satan and destroy Hell.

- If He were all-powerful then He could do it.
- If He were all-loving then He would want to do it.
- If He were all-merciful and all-forgiving then He would most certainly do it.

So why doesn’t “God” get rid of Hell. Well obviously because this is the draw of Christianity. If there were no Hell then there would not be much reason to adopt Christianity, well at least the parts that you didn’t like. Without Hell there’s no threat of non-belief and no control.

Now someone may say that by keeping Hell, God is allowing us to exercise our free will to believe in and love Him. Well to me that’s like spanking a child and then throwing them out of the house because they don’t love you. I don’t know of any Christian that would find that acceptable of a person to do, so why is it acceptable of their God.

You do not seem to realize that you cannot "prove" anything divine to the contrary. There is no god or gods simply because you cannot. The burden of "proof" rests on the believer. Yeah, that’s kind of what I figured, but I was just curious. If that’s the case then I tend to agree. While the Bible contains some good literature, poetry, morals, and the like, it also contains a great deal of injustice, absurdities, cruelty, violence, intolerance, and sexism.
(NOTE: If anybody disagrees with the above statement, I strongly encourage posting about it in a different thread because this could easily be a discussion in itself.)

I guess that’s one of the benefits of being an atheist. Since I don’t acknowledge or appeal to the authority of the Bible, I can pick and choose the parts that I like in the Bible and can ignore the rest as rants of religious extremism not to be taken seriously. I don’t mind people that take the Bible out of context, it’s the people that take the whole Bible into context that’s scary.

With that said though, don’t try to take the Bible out of context to try to convince me of the authority of Christianity. Don’t give me that “For God so loved the world…” crap. Even though it sounds all nice and gushy, I don’t take that seriously either. Because obviously if you start picking and choosing what is truth and what is authority and leaving out the rest, then how do you know that your picking the right parts?

The probelm here is one of epistemology. That is to say that you with your set of beliefs derive truisms from those beliefs. Your position is firmly rooted in those beliefs and it is so all-encompassing that it prevents you stepping outside of them in order to view the world from a detached and objective point of view.

Atheism is a doctrine which is outside of your sphere of beliefs (and that of all other religions too). The fact of the matter is that according to your view (as derived from having read your link) then satan is logically the author of all other belief systems. Not only is this arrogant, ignorant, divisive and dangerous, it is lumping together Atheists with other religions which is just plain wrong. Atheism is not a belief system. We claim no origin or original author for the doctrine we ascribe to. The abscence of such an official origin is no cogent or logical argument for ascribing an origin of your choice (satan in your words). Atheism is varied in it's nature. For example, there are some people who just haven't made up their mind yet, some who enjoy a good argument and there are people who have been hurt by religion or see the pain it causes an perpetuates in the world and despise it for what it does to people.

The problem is that you believe Atheism is a device of satan. The truth is that because satan is a christian concept your belief structure is nicely circular and so answers itself. It has an answer pre-prepared and is not willing to entertain a perspective without the same constructs.

It is like stating 2+2=4. You know this is true. This is self-evident given what you know about the number 2. However there have been different proofs over the years that 2+2 can equal 5 (Gauss in the mid 1800's even provided an arithmetic which proved that 2+2=3!). This shows that if you take a step outside of your bubble and listen to anothers perspective using different, but equally valid rules, a different answer will emerge, which, given the values of those rules, is correct. One is not more correct than the other, because of the equivalence of the rules governing the end result in each case. Each is right in their own right.

I hope this is clearer. To sum up; Atheism is not the product of the devil because it is entirely possible to be an atheist and reject god AND the devil. Surely if something was authored by "satan" he would have done it get people to follow him? The fact for us remains that there is no god, there is no satan and there are no other gods either. There is in fact...nothing!

Besides there is an entire doctrine of philosophy which successfully argues for the non-existence of a god based on the traditionally christian constructs of divinity: omnipotence, omniscience, omnipresence and omnibenevolence, (see the "basic assumptions" link on the home page of this site as a good starting point) so it's not just the theology which separates theists from Atheists, the differences are philosphical as well.

That's what I mean about the difference being essentially epistemological in nature. How do you know what you know? I can categorically state and reasonably defend my position with demonstrable and cogent theological and philosophical arguments. I am willing to bet that you are unable to do so to the same degree if at all.

It's a good question LES. Here's the difference. The gnostics invented a whole bunch of angels and an intermediate god to try and defend their belief that material things were bad and therefore a perfect God could not have created them. Their world-view directly contradicted the OT and so they had to discard it. Christianity on the other hand does not contradict the OT. It defends it as an essential part of God's revelation. Hey, even the OT didn't fall from the sky complete. All of the OT and NT is a progressive revelation.

Anyway, fellow atheist, I am a little bit dissapointed in you. Atheism is obviously a lack of belief in any god/deity- we obviously don't believe in satan.
