I'd like to welcome our newest member (and my brother) to the RA Forums: Biofreak. He's a budding athiest (8 years of age) and wanted to know more about what he didn't believe in. I told him this these forums were a great resource for that he said like join. So here are.
[applause]
Okay i'm done. Here's Biofreak. ;)

Eight years old?!? When I was eight, I was more concerned with my GI Joes rescuing Princess Leia from Voltron in the twig fortress I built in my backyard.
But welcome, Biofreak, to our fair forum.
Oh, and He-Man was there too, fighting with Optimus Prime. :D

Hi, I'm Biofreak. Um... This is cool? I can't wait to learn about more about athiesm and theism and all that jazz... And that's all I got.

This is cool?
Well, "cool" may be overstating it a bit. We prefer to think of it as "refreshing."
Hey DMofD&D, why don't you set Biofreak up with his own handle, avatar, the works?

Hi Rhino.
Well i'm more into legos than athiesm. DM once made me a set of 3D legos on the computer. But living in the country with no one to play with 'cept the DM gets boring and I only have a liited set of bricks to play with. So I have to go extreme measures to amuse my self. This forum looks like fun.
By the way sorry about the account mix up back there.

Yes, nice avatar.
And He-Man defeats opponents with his powers of Homoeroticism and tight leather short-shorts. But Voltron would school them all (the Lion Voltron, not the lame space ship one).

Voltron? Wouldn't he have to kill the Thundercats the first?
Welcome young padawan learner. I am glad to see that you are entering the arts of logic, reason, and Voltron at the tender age of eight.

What is Voltron?
What's wrong with kids these days? Well, I can forgive you only because you have the courage to be an atheist at 8 years old. It took me quite a while to come up with that label, even though I've been an atheist for as long as I can remember, although that's mostly because I come from a very religious family, while you clearly don't.
The only advice I can give is think on your own, the world is full of stupid people (at least 86% if only 14% are atheist).
And, come on, don't mess with Optimus Prime.

I'm homeschooled and we only network TV so I don't see a lot of cartoons. Except on monday. DM and me spend the night at our grand-Ps and they get 900 channels. Even then there still isn't much to watch.
Well, I can forgive you only because you have the courage to be an atheist at 8 years old.
My brother is atheistic and my parents are agnostic and living out in the middle of nowhere doesn't allow for many freinds so... Nobody was influencing my world view (not that I had one). Then I asked bro why he was an athiest and it sorta went from there. I didn't know there was anything to be afraid of.

Sin-O-Lot - According to my calculations, he's not only too young to remember Voltron, but the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers as well. In fact, he's got to be roughly the same age as Alanis Morrisette's Jagged Little Pill album. This really blows my mind.
Welcome, you freakish prodigy child, you!

Why God, Why?
Crackers, crosses, Christians
Why God, Why?
What have I done to deserve this Green horror?
Surrounded on all sides with the Hell of Christians
Like a Thomas Moore character, I'm wordy and alone

What's wrong with you people? Skeletor kicks ass. The only ones he can't beat are the ambiguously gay duo, and that's only because they make him feel an inner confusion that he has yet to deal with.
You know, I always kinda thought that about Skeletor.

You make a good point. But the whole reason I came here was to develop my mind. DM's finding other resources for me to look at. And he did advise not to make the decision right away.
From what I know about atheists and theists and agnostics, I prefer athiests. I came here to learn more about atheists and such. Were going to buy a bible to look at too.
Another brick in the wall

Why buy a bible when you can get one for free? Is there a college near where you live? If so, I'm sure there's a Campus Crusade for Christ ministry that's willing to hook you up with any kind of book you want. Any large library will also have a good selection of religious books, including various editions of the bible.

The only moral way to acquire a Bible is to steal one from a hotel. I wouldn't advise stealing the towels, though. I work at a hotel, and they basically pay me to pick hairs off the laundry.
Ick.
DMofD&D

There aren't any colleges or libraries (that we can use) near us. The only free bible we can get is on the net. Books just aren't made to read on a computer screen. It's funny...I could have sworn I had a KJV somewhere.

Welcome Biofreak!
I think that from your name, that you might be interested in Biology.
I am!
I am very excited by a website that I have just discovered, and you might well like it too!
It's simply exciting!
And it makes a new and exciting way to understand biology!
It is about how we can generate an easy understanding of what has been called the "Genetic Code".
Which you will probably learn in school (but in generally baffles people!)
The "Genetic Code" is a fundamental element of the procedure by which bio-chemicals generate life!!
Probably you have heard about how DNA encodes "information" about how to build alive-beings.
Well, the Genetic Code is a fundamental part of the mechanism by which this "information" is actively used to actually build the re-active elements of life (proteins) which make everything in alive-beings happen!
The site is www.codefun.com.
Even if you don't know enough yet to appreciate it all, Dungeon Master may be able to fill in the gaps, and I am certain you will enjoy the colour graphics.
And they sell footballs with the genetic code on it!!!
Have fun with it!
impossible to believe in crazy nonsense. I have to reckon that the so-called "theists" are people who see that their religion is crazy, and are recklessly ignoring the obvious fact that it is crazy, and are "practising" this craziness anyway. As far as I know, I am the only one on this site to hold this view.]
All the best!
Biofreak
05-29-2005, 04:55 PM
I am interested in Biology. Mostly plants. Dinosuars are cool too.
Why is it impossible to believe somthing like crazy nonsense? Have you ever been a theist? And if all theists do know that their religion is moose cocka, how did godism get started in the first place? When godism was invented, nobody knew about dinosaurs or DNA or electricity or even what shape their planet was.
Sorry if I seem to inquisitive.
PanAtheist

Heh, I did PLANT SCIENCES at University! :-)
One of my favourite things is to look at mosses under a high-powered magnifying glass, (or a binocular stereoscopic microscope). They are tremendously beautiful things close up!
I highly recommend doing this!
And also take a high-powered magnifying glass (say x20)(that'd be a very small-diameter lens by the way - not a big "Sherlock Holmes" thingy) and look at LICHENS on rocks, and walls, and tombstones, and pavements. They, too, are tremendously extra-ordinary when all-magnified and close-up.
It is always worth carrying a high-powered lens in your pocket! You can come across extra-ordinary sites everywhere!
Ahh, plants!
Are you Interested in photosynthesis, how plants catch and "feed" off light?
That is a thing on which all our life depends!
Dinosaurs - brilliant of course!
There was an article about the Chinese dinosaurs in the New Scientist this week I think.
Actually it was Geology and Paleontology (the study of rocks and fossils) which got be turned on to biology in the first place. I have a collection of fossils (not dinosaurs!!! mainly shell-creatures like ammonites and lamellibranchs).
That's another thing that's great fun - fossil hunting!!
Go fossil-hunting!!
Heck, if you're in America, you can get yourself on a real DINOSAUR dig!!
At the moment I am learning about biochemisty (hence the post above).
Also, I am beginning a study of astronomy (which is very handy to know if you're going to be an atheist! :-)
If you find any interesting sites out there on the web, or indeed, find anything interesting in the real world that is worth sharing, it would be great to hear about it.
Take care! Have fun!
[Oh yeh, Atheism....
Hey, I like this putting-Atheism-in-brackets-thing-at-the-end!!
"Why is it impossible to believe somthing like crazy nonsense?"
Because it's nonsense. Because it's crazy!
And everyone CAN see that "God" and "miracles" and "religion" are nonsense and crazy.
Kids see this before they are eight!
Because sense develops before language, and so sense develops before theism has a chance of being established.
Everyone has faith in sense, whether they care do admit or not.
Sense is that-which-gives-them-the-world!!!]

But what if they don't know it's nonsense? They didn't have anything else to compare it to at the time.
