View Full Version : Why did God create humans?

First of all, first time poster, i just found the site, and i've got to say i'm liking the feel here. It doesn't look like there's too many 12 yr olds with a keyboard around, if you know what i mean.
A bit about myself, i guess, I'm 21, live near toronto, canada, and was raised as a Lutheran, until i hit the age of reason and logic, which was prolly somewhere around 12 or 13.
Now, on to the question, and i'm hoping some theists of any type can help me. Why did God(or any higher being) create us? Why're we here?
I've been pondering this, and looked for a few answers online, but i really didn't find much. There was one answer that concluded that we were here for God's pleasure...and man..does that ever scare me that someone can justify all the killing and hate because somewhere, some dude's got his feet up, and he's laughing at us.
But why worship? If God is perfect, and complete and all emcompassing, why does he need our worship. (or whatever it is that we give him) Do we give him some sort of energy?
The way i look at it is that the only reason for creating something is to have need for it. So what're we?
Looking at tools:
Man created the wheel because he needed too move farther and faster more easily.
Man created the club because his hand was really soft and weak compared to what he was hunting.
Chimpanzees use sticks to get ants and termites out of mounds because they're hungry.
God created man because...
And for bonus marks, no bible quotes. I wanna know what you feel.

Now, on to the question, and i'm hoping some theists of any type can help me. Why did God(or any higher being) create us? Why're we here?
I'd say god created us so he could express his love for us. What is love without an object of love? The object is not necessary, but it seems to work out better.
But why worship? If God is perfect, and complete and all emcompassing, why does he need our worship. (or whatever it is that we give him) Do we give him some sort of energy?
Need? There is no talk about god needing our love/worship nor talk about us giving him energy. Worship is done because he's god and we're not. It's a natural process I think. We admire and respect other people because of who they are and god is no different except the respect and admiration is on a much higher level.
And for bonus marks, no bible quotes. I wanna know what you feel.
gimmie, gimmie, gimmie. What's my bonus?

But how did God know he loved us before we were created?
And If God wished to express his love for something, then that would also have to mean he's not infinite, and was lacking that component to express his love to.

God expresses his love for us in kind of a half-assed way. If I loved someone, I would try to keep them from being victimised by, say, the Nazis.
I guess that's just me though.

There are many more beetles on earth than people. Perhaps god was intending to create a perfect planet for beetles, and humanity was just an unintended side effect.

Why Did God Even Bother
Dear Lord I must ask, were you fully aware,
When you created the heavens and earth,
Placing man and woman in the Garden Of Eden,
Would lead only to suffering from the time of our birth.
Were you aware of the odds that were stacked so high,
That we'd be doomed from the beginning of time,
With wars and famine ravaging the world,
Our leaders unconcerned with mankind.
Like a child to his father I ask many things,
And it's because I simply don't understand,
That how, when you knew what the future would be,
You even bothered in creating man.
Even as I write, you will already know,
The words before they appear on my paper,
You know where I've been, and know where I'll go,
And if I'll arrive now, or much later.
You have provided me with an inquisitive mind,
And so these questions I must continue to ask,
Wouldn't it have been better for all of us,
If you had made Adam and Eve the last?
It's not that I'm laying the blame on you,
Nor do I believe you are the cause of our trouble,
I'm just sitting here thinking if you knew all these things,
Why on earth did you create such a rubble.

I say we don't worship anything. Better to spend your time having fun or doing something useful. Bonus points if you can combine the two.

And he will torture for eternity all of those who do not obey his rules - because he loves us?
Do you think I should command my rabbit to worship me because I believe myself more significant than he? Maybe I should burn him if he doesn't obey me.

I'd say god created us so he could express his love for us. What is love without an object of love?...
What a load of absolute tripe! That is a complete non sequitur. Look at the nature of love: Love is an expression of a relationship TO AN OBJECT. The object must therefore exist before the emotion: Object first....relation to and emotion about that object second.
Need? There is no talk about god needing our love/worship nor talk about us giving him energy. Worship is done because he's god and we're not. It's a natural process I think. We admire and respect other people because of who they are and god is no different except the respect and admiration is on a much higher level.
If "god" is no different then the same rules apply - surely? Therefore it stands to reason (I know, I know xtians don't function on reason but just bear with me...) that in order for "god " to express a supposed love he would have needed the object first in order to love it. I mean theology and philosophy aside - it's just contrary to the rules of linguistics and the relatedness of subject/object!

gimmie, gimmie, gimmie. What's my bonus?
What the "love" of your "god" is not enough?

Welcome CFett. You must remember that this is an Atheist forum (despite xtian lurkers rushing to answer your post so quickly like a horse at a steeplechase!) As such I personally do not believe in a "god" or "gods" which kinda precludes answering your question within a framework of theistic belief.
However, I can run through some reasons why I think there is no god and why, if he had indeed created us for what ever reason, then he's a totally different being to the one you learn about in church: He's actually somewhat of what I like to call a mega-asshole. Like the 'creation-due-to-need' examples. Happy posting:)

That being said some people say Elvis was not just The King but god: There used to be a 24 hr Church of Elvis. It is now sadly defunct and bankrupt. Let us all pray that other churches follow in it's footstpes....ahuh huh...thanguvrmuch

Most already do - some even say Lennon was god.
But didn't he say that God was a concept by which we measure our pain (http://www.oldielyrics.com/lyrics/john_lennon/god.html)?
Also: he didn't believe in Beatles or Elvis. He did believe in Yoko!

Too true, too true. Isn't it ironic that his iconoclasm in speaking out with such profundity against following these religions like mindless sheep means he has practically been deified by millions?...

Now, on to the question, and i'm hoping some theists of any type can help me. Why did God(or any higher being) create us? Why're we here?
I'll take the question a step further. If we are supposed to be spiritual beings with souls, why did god create us in the flesh?
Further still. If for whatever reason we had to be created in the flesh, why were we created needing sustenance to survive?
Okay, this is too easy. If we just had to have sustenance to survive, why were we created as organism killing and consuming creatures? Why were we not created as photosynthetic creatures?
Science doesn't apply. God controls the laws of physics, and he could have made us as sunlight gathering green plant people if he wanted to.

Hmmm...
It was Moses who made that statement, so it must be true.
