View Full Version : "Red Dawn" Gun nut's wet dream
Another brick in the wall

I recently watched one of my favorite action movies. It's about a Soviet invasion of the United States, and a group of teenagers who form a resistance movement to fight them. When I watched it as a kid, I enjoyed the fantasy heroics, but now that I'm a little older, I noticed things that I didn't see before. For one, there are lots of little right wing messages implanted into the dialogue. For example, one of the first things the Soviets do when they invade the town is go to the gun store to pull up the list of all the gun owners, so they can eliminate potential guerrillas. Message: Gun laws = death by communist hordes. Later, an downed fighter pilot tells stories of how saboteurs from Cuba crossed illegaly at the Mexican border to disable American defenses. Message: Unprotected border = death by communist hordes.
The other thing I thought about when I was watching the movie was how could untrained teenagers possibly evade and defeat much larger Soviet forces over and over? Never mind the fact that they were hiding in the woods without any trace of a substantial shelter. And horses! They had horses; where did they keep them when they weren't using them? Horses need lots of food and such, so I didn't think that was very plausible.
Here are some open ended questions:
-In the event of an invasion, what would you do? Surrender, hide, or resist? Or other? I would resist, but I would be really sneeky about it. I would spy on the enemy and take the information to friendly forces.
-What would be the best tactics for a resistance movement? I'd hide in an urban area.

I'd probably just stay my old low-key self, looking for an opportunity to strike. Actually, I think that'd be a pretty good tactic. You could have a quiet life by day, but band together at night to fight the forces of evil, like modern-day superheroes. Of course, we'd only know each other by our code names, in case one of us gets captured, so that nobody can names names to "the man".

It would depend on who was invading, I suppose. At the moment, the Federal government is scarier than most potential enemies.
Presuming it was an enemy that I despise like North Korea or Iran, tyrannical cocksuckers coming to take away Ghoulslime's freedom, I would go home to Northern Idaho and make their fucking lives miserable for as long as I could. I'm not much of a zoo animal. I just couldn't take being imprisoned. Fuck low key, I would want to kill as many of the slimy motherfuckers as I could before I take my long dirt nap.

Evade and ignore. Shoot back when fired upon. If enough people do it no criminal, invader or even worse - government - can stand a chance.
The problem is most people are cattle.

Well, my maternal grandad managed to survive 4 years as a resistance fighter in WW2 Malaya. He then spent a further 8 years fighting the combined might of the British empire as a communist guerilla before surrendering. Tough old geezer he was.

Sad but true. It woud be nice if more people thought for themselves instead of doing what someone else told them to do. One thing that always confused me was that in the gulags an concentration camps, the prisoners greatly outnumbered the guards. If they banded together, they could have easily overpowered the guards and escaped.

Problem is, the guards had all the weapons. Everyone working together may have brought them down, and I'm sure that thought crossed everyone's minds. Then again, some people would have to basically sacrifice themselves so that their buddies could take down the guards while the guards re-loaded. So in this case, it's selfishness that's the problem, not group mentality.

In spite of the fact that, as NihilistThug pointed out, most Americans are in fact worthless pieces of shit (okay, I reworded that!), I'm still of the absolute conviction that there are at least enough people willing to stand up and fight when the SHTF... many people who otherwise would live out a pathetically dull and uneventful existence very well could, given the right circumstances, become heroes of the same caliber as those of our Revolutionary War.
All it takes is a cause great enough to rouse their fighting spirit, and conditions favourable for such an enterprise to be successful, and you'd be surprised how many inconspicuous individuals there are laying low right now, scattered all over the place, going to work each day, eating shit from the government and society everyday... individuals who one day, when the moment for decisive action arrives, will call up their battle fury and engage the enemy with a level of intensity, courage and determination that, as history has proven time and time again, always triumphs over superior numbers and superior technology.
