View Full Version : God On Our Money

There was a thread a while back on inking "In God We Trust" off of American money. I must say I do this occasionally, but had never seen one with it already done until today. Only thing is, while the phrase was clearly sharpied over, someone had stamped "Jesus is GOD: Jesus Saves" right under it in bright red ink. I couldn't believe that someone had clearly taken the time to go through a significant amount of money looking to censor a secular protest. Anyone else seen this?

Haha, that's freakin' weird! I never look closely enough at my money to see whether or not someone tampered with the "In God We Trust" part.
The Raving Atheist should sell "No, He's Not" stamps just in case we run across any more of those "Jesus is GOD" stamps.

Now for the new wave of terror, which will be fought not with men and guns, but with money and white out. Tremble at my fury theists, for we shall provale

There are two ways to get god off our money. One is to elect politicians who will appoint fair judges who either aren't Christian, or who truly understand separation of church and state.
There is one way to get god off our money. We must convince christians that god wouldn't want to be referenced on our money. Can someone better versed in the bible than myself make a strong case for this? I know about "give unto ceasar that which is ceasar's." and "it is easier for a mule to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven" but making the case I want out of those is a stretch.
Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

I'm sure our resident theists thomas and lurker would not have a problem removing the word "God" from our money, but the loon jobs in power who use religion as a political shield would never go for it. Just another case of the vast, all encompassing liberal atheist conspiracy that is persecuting Christians around the nation.

I find a Marks-A-Lot does a good job of removing God from our money, too. :)

My previous offer from when we discussed this issue last still stands. If you have a problem with "In God We Trust" on your money then just send it to me. I don't mind it at all. I'd be happy to help.....

I have been inking god off my money when I remember. In the past, I have been replacing "god" with something secular like "logic", "reason", or "S.O.C.A.S." But now I want to replace that endorsement of theism with an endorsement of strong atheism. Something like "There is no God". However, I also want to modify the money in such a way that it will still work in vending machines. What to do? What to do?
Thomas, does your god want to be mentioned on our money? Why or why not?

He has given no direct opinion on the matter. I think God does want nations to honor Him and acknowledge Him as God, but I don't think He appears to be overly interested in symbolic gestures of that.

Its more important to me to get it out of the Pledge. In 'God We Trust' grinding against some strippers butt is amusing to me.

I've always believed it should be written on all toilet paper. In GOD we trust! E Pluribus Anus. :D

Yesterday I got called in to work graveyard shift (you can imagine how happy I was about this one) and having nothing to do for six of the eight hours I was there, because we know one can only take so many crossword puzzles--anyone getting change from the grocery store anytime soon won't have "In God We Trust" on their money. :D

We're lucky enough, in the UK, to have no reference to God on our notes. IHere is a list of people on UK banknotes. Shame about that bitch on the other side though...
* 5 pound note with Elizabeth Fry, showing a meeting of people possibly discussing prisoners' rights.
* 10 pound note with Charles Darwin, a hummingbird and the HMS Beagle.
* 20 pound note with Sir Edward Elgar, with a view of the west face of Worcester Cathedral.
* 50 pound note with John Houblon
I like the Darwin one, but I doubt your average bible-basher does.
Will it ever happen in America?

That's amazing from the perspective of an American atheist. I would be proud to use money with darwin's pic on it, and no god reference.

I may have to do some research on the UK. Maybe I'll move there in the future.
I'm pretty sure America is going to screw itself up (like it hasn't already.) and there's not much hope for it.
(Yes, I'd rather leave this place to go to a better one than try to help it. Fuck love of ones country!)

Well, before you get too excited about the UK, remember that the Queen is the Head of State and Head of the Church. There is no spearation at all between Church and State. Bishops of the Church automatically get to sit and vote in the House of Lords and religious observance is mandated in public (state) schools.
As for Darwin on the money. Christians in the UK, even creationists, are too secure in their beliefs to get hysterical over something as assinine as worrying about what is pictured or written on their money.

I agree with thomas. I really don't care what idiotic drivel is inscribed on our money as long as I can use it at
7-11. The US actually has a lot less religion than many other countries. The words "God is Great" is inscribed 22 times on the Iranian flag. The Star of David appears on Israel's flag. Many flags feature Christian crosses and Muslim crescents. Sometimes I wish atheists would just let go of things like the Pledge of Allegiance or prayer in Congress. It's all a charade anyway.

Even if you're right, it still sends a mixed message to say that the US is a secular nation and have all this god bullshit all over the place. Not to mention how terrifying it is to hear Bush spout religious drivel and be completely unwilling to budge on what he sees as religious issues.

It's an interesting situation where the UK has much less in terms of separation of Church and State and yet in my experience has a much lower level of interest in religion, lower church attendance and less religion in politics than the US that has a formalised separation.
Maybe the answer lies in the culture, the society and the people and less in the form of government ?

He's just playing to the crowd. I have a modified version of Penn and Teller's theory. I don't think anyone really believes in religion, not the people preaching it, not the people listening to it, nobody. I think if you sat a person down, gave them a cup of coffee and looked them in the eye, they would admit it's all bullshit. Maybe you find it terrifying that Bush is spouting religion, I find it comical. Don't worry about the Christians. Most of them are quite lackadaisical when it comes to their religion. I'm pretty sure fewer than 1% of Christians have read more than a page of the bible. Americans like to eat, drink, smoke, gamble, suck, fuck, and fondle too much to let some silly religion get in the way, and watch how pissed they get when someone tries to interfere.
