I'm originally from Florida - lived there for *counts....* 26 years. Then I got hitched to a Canadian and moved here because his career was better than mine. I'm 28 now and starting to feel really old. Feeling old sucks. What Iw ould give to be 20 again, and make different life choices... oh man...

23-year-old male, living in Ann Arbor, MI. Currently a graduate student in chemistry.

To MrsMoe: What I wouldn't give to be a little older! Like Rodney Dangerfield, early twenty-somethings "never get no respect". Just today, I saw an article calling us the "Entitlement Generation", 'cause we're all spoiled brats. Aargh!

I grew up in Chandler, AZ, but now live in Seattle, WA as a college student at UW. 20, male, studying biochemistry for premed (possibly alternative).

I must say that growing up in AZ hardwired me to love every drop of rain. Now, in Seattle, I get plenty of it and among many who have had enough of it I keep enjoying it. Some people equate "nice day" with "sunny day", but I find overcast to be precious (even after 30 days straight) and sunny days to be nostalgic (what a great mental "trick"). It is perhaps the greatest location transition in the US. ;)

I'm Canadian buy I've been living in South Korea on and off for the past 7 years.

To MrsMoe: Honey, 28 isn't old. Age is something that doesn't matter, unless you are a cheese. Besides, who said older was bad.

"Many people think old age is a disease, something to be thwarted if possible. But someone has said that if any period is a disease, it is youth. Age is recovering from it."

Or wine.
Although bad cheese and bad wine won't be helped by aging, and good cheese and good wine are still good no matter what their ages.

Lived all over the place, went to school here and there picking up knowledge in philosophy and film, and got screwed working on a nature DVD project (there's nothing like your first lawsuit). Right now I live in Fargo, ND, working at a small film distribution company, but considering either going back to school or going to S. Korea to teach philosophy at a private school.

I'm in Hamilton - husband is in TO right now at work... so we are close huh? :)

And I have a kid - she is 7 -and one on the way - hence my feeling so old... I've also been divorced, and let me tell you, nothing ages you the way a divorce does. So, you have a little one? Boy or girl?

As far as the Hip - we try not to ever miss a concert. I also go to see Gord's solo act before in Buffalo - it was really cool. Love his solo work (Coke Machine Glow and Battle of the Nudes.)

I’ve lived almost my entire adult life in other countries.

At the moment I am in Los Angeles, though I doubt my Viking inclinations will allow me to stay very long.

What’s all of this complaining about age? I’m 44 and feel 16. It’s all in your heads, kids. Keep your body fit and your mind sharp – you’ll never get old.

I was born in B/quilla Colombia, a Christ-psychosis (catholic strain) infected nation, attended a strongly infected all men Christ-psychosis High School, traveled all over the world ( father was an embasador, learned French), Mother is German so I learned the language, grandmother Italian with Alberto Giacometti genes, ( learned the language), learned Latin at school ( mandatory), then other languages besides the mother language Spanish. Wanted to be a proffessional student but parents cutted off my money supply, so I only have 7 Universtity degrees. I end up in Arizona, and since this is the healthiest place on earth for me ( at LXIII I never get sick and feel and look 20 years younger--of course being Christ-psychosis free, it helps) I made my home here. Always Blue skies, no humidity, it seldom rains, benefit of all type of climates, awesome great hole in the ground ( Grand Canyon), nice fauna, and nice people..thought the Christ-psychosis strain of Mormonism is always noticed....poor people. :)

I begun recovering from the Christ-psychosis mental illness when I started to ask questions, do research and get educated and travel at twenty years of age. I feel so sorry about people infected with the illness. it is awful. People will not KNOW true happiness till they have free themselves from Religious-psychosis. The most destructive invisible mental illness that dares not to speak its name....:)

Yes. Thais are unbelievably friendly people. Forget all the media bullshit about how terrible the nasty Thai sex trade is. It is hyped up horseshit meant to shock Christian westerners into buying magazines and tuning in to news reports. Is there a vibrant sex industry? Yes. Is it all there is to Thailand? Hell no! Thailand is a wonderful place to experience. I can promise you memories that will last forever. As far as work goes; don’t expect to become rich working there. You can make a very comfortable living by Thai standards. You should not expect to bring your earnings back to Beverley Hills and buy a house.

If you have any particular questions, fire away.

Why not do both? Hedge your bets! It never hurts to have a college degree. I would strongly recommend something marketable. North America is projected to have a shortage of medical personnel in the next few decades. Anything related to medicine is a pretty good bet. (You don’t have to think brain surgeon. Nurses and hospital administrators make excellent wages) As far as business goes; it’s hard to get a Microsoft going, but a small to moderate-sized business is not an unrealistic goal.

You are still a young lady. Family or not, you have many possibilities. Don’t sell yourself short. Choose a battle and start fighting it. Whether you choose school or business or both, the most important thing is that you choose SOMETHING and DO IT!

I pretty much went native my first couple of years and studied things from the inside. After a bit it wore off and I reverted back to being a Canadian again but I can still slide back into the perspective occasionally. Korean culture is kinda ripped apart due to the Japanese occupation and I got more understanding of where they come from when I traveled in China than living in Korea. Most koreans know very little about their own culture besides the food and the text book dates that they memorize. (Do you agree Ghoulslime?)

These days I take more pleasure in studying for up coming vacations as my job gives me quite a bit of time off. I'm considering a road trip through the southern US for the next one (Before atheists aren't allowed in anymore) as I've pretty much seen all of Asia that I'm interested in.

It sounds like you've done a lot of traveling yourself. What was your favorite place? Any recomendations? Gotta ask if you were serious about all the degrees and what they might be in. I worked my way through University so I really envy you your chance to get that much education.

Thanks for the info Slime. I kind of figured a lot of the stories were BS after reading some websites put up by Thai students and business men. Also if the local Thai restaurants where I live are any indication, Thai food is the best on the planet! (personal opinion)

Here however is a more direct quetion for anyone here. Where I live you really need some sort of connections to get anywhere in business. As a hermit this makes for more work on my part. My problem is that I can not stand to be anything but professional when doing work. I do not care how someone's weekend went or what the local sport team did. This small talk seems to be the life bond with other people. My lack of participation in such talk makes people think I am unfriendly.

I often have the same problem. People seem to think from my appearance and mannerisms that I'm cold and strict. Humor helps though. It just makes it that much funnier when someone expects me to be serious all the time.

The only problem I see is that quite a few people are just so thick that they don't understand sarcasm when it bites them in the ass.

Unfortunately, though, I think that gossip is universally human. The only thing I can suggest is move to a bigger company/town/school. Of course, I don't know how populous it is where you are, but I think the the more people, the more different kinds there are and the less people like to gossip (makes it harder to care about how other people behave when you see thousands a day instead of tens). Or, if you don't like someone you meet, you could always find more in a big town or city.

That at least covers the personal. Business connections are an entirely different beast, although I did hear that in Japan they have a designated time for applying for jobs, and everyone just scrambles for them. Crazy system if you ask me, but it might make it easier to get in on pure ability. Anyone else hear of this?

First of all, 'live long and prosper'. Secondly, I really don't think there is any place on earth where everyone doesn't want to know your business and to tell you theirs. Living outside your own culture makes it even worse because you become like an exotic zoo animal that should be watched for strange mating habbits or abherant behavior. Perhaps a change of career to something a little more suitable for your personality...hell, start your own damn company and then you can talk or not talk to anyone you like.

Hmm that last part was a bit grim. I was exposed to enormous doses of hypocracy in the last few years. I believe I have 3rd degree burns. :D

See here is where the bad influence of someone like GhoulSlime comes into play. My initial reaction to this is to make a very perverse comment about this.
