Not surprising at all. All it's saying is that a female that doesn't have to expend the energy to maintain a reproductive system can expend it in more immediately practical ways.

Interresting mechanism to deal with a harsh environment, though. If they can't find a mate, then conditions are probably harsher than normal, and they go into cloning mode to ensure the survival of the species. Just my uneducated explanation. Wonder what the researchers thought.
