Damn, this is a hard one for me. I watch 3-5 movies a day, so what's my favorite changes on a weekly basis.
Soooooo, let's see, this week some good movies I've seen are:
Meet John Doe (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033891/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxsbT01MDB8dHQ9MXxmYj11fHBuPT B8cT1tZWV0IGpvaG4gZG9lfGh0bWw9MXxubT0x;fc=1;ft=21)
The Stranger (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038991/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxsbT01MDB8dHQ9MXxmYj11fHBuPT B8cT1UaGUgU3RyYW5nZXJ8aHRtbD0xfG5tPTE_;fc=1;ft=138 ;fm=1)
A Walk In The Sun (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0038235/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxsbT01MDB8dHQ9MXxmYj11fHBuPT B8cT1BIFdhbGsgaW4gdGhlIFN1bnxodG1sPTF8bm09MQ__;fc= 1;ft=20;fm=1)
The Life Aquatic (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0362270/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxsbT01MDB8dHQ9MXxmYj11fHBuPT B8cT1UaGUgTGlmZSBBcXVhdGljfGh0bWw9MXxubT0x;fc=1;ft =20)
V (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085106/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxsbT01MDB8dHQ9MXxmYj11fHBuPT B8cT1WfGh0bWw9MXxubT0x;fc=2;ft=17;fm=1)
And that is some of the better stuff I've watched in the last few days. As for favorite movie ever, it depends what my mood is. I'd say Citizen Kane (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0033467/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxsbT01MDB8dHQ9MXxmYj11fHBuPT B8cT1DaXRpemVuIGthbmV8aHRtbD0xfG5tPTE_;fc=1;ft=20; fm=1) is probably the best film ever made, but I don't know if I'd call it my favorite. Shaolin Soccer (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286112/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxsbT01MDB8dHQ9MXxmYj11fHBuPT B8cT1TaGFvbGluIFNvY2NhcnxodG1sPTF8bm09MQ__;fc=1;ft =21;fm=1) is one of the funniest movies I've seen in the last few years. I'm a big fan of Clint Eastwood (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000142/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxsbT01MDB8dHQ9MXxmYj11fHBuPT B8cT1DbGludCBFYXN0d29vZHxodG1sPTF8bm09MQ__;fc=1;ft =20;fm=1), as an actor and a director (Mystic River, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Unforgiven, etc., etc.).
How could I forget 39 Steps (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0026029/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxsbT01MDB8dHQ9MXxmYj11fHBuPT B8cT0zOSBTdGVwcywgVGhlIHxodG1sPTF8bm09MQ__;fc=1;ft =20;fm=1)? I just finished watching it an hour ago.

It totally depends on my mood but these are a few movies I'll stop flicking channels for;
Fifth element (art in motion and music, not to mention costume design)
Roman Holiday (Audrey Hepburn is classic)
Snatch (I have no idea what Brad Pitt was saying most of the time but it was damn funny)
Lock Stock and Smoking Barrel (Most of the same actors as Snatch and also directed by Guy Ritchie)
Apollo 13 (fuels my childhood dream to be an astronaut)
Original Star Wars and Indiana Jones (again with the childhood thing)
Aliens (all of them because she kicks ass and I couldn't sleep for days after watching any of them)
Pitchblack (not original story but good characterization, the sequal sucked)
I'm going to see Sin City this weekend so I'll get back to you on that one.

Every so often I try to come with a top ten list of fave flicks, but it ain't possible. There are probably 50 in my pantheon, and they cannot be rated in descending or ascending order because they are so disparate. How can I compare, say, Yojimbo to Godfather 2? Here are ten (in alphabetical order) that did not fail me as pure, unadulterated entertainment:
Alien
Casablanca
Diva
Empire Strikes Back
The Exorcist
Galaxy Quest
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Goodfellas
Jaws
Robocop
P.S. In a couple hours I'm off to see War of the Worlds. I'll let youse know if Tom Cruise defeats Xenu or simply to decides to worship him.

I like Throne of Blood best, as far as Kurasawa goes. Rashoman was also good.
And I personally love Mel Brooks (and am female). Spaceballs, High Anxiety, Young Frankenstein, Men in Tights, etc. are all great. Blazing Saddles is funny, but not my favorite of his.
My tastes vary, but some of my favorites in no partiular order:
Casablanca (the best written film ever)
Indiana Jones trilogy
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Star Wars trilogy
Roman Holiday
Spider-Man and X-Men movies were enjoyable, still need to see the new Batman
Forrest Gump
Rear Window
Holiday
It Happened One Night
Witness
Best movie I saw recently, Million Dollar Baby. Best movie I saw ever, I'll second the nomination for Citizen Kane.

Ya know, No one ever asks what everyone's favorite book is, it's just not contemporary.
My favorite movie series:
Nightmare on elm street (first 3, got silly at the end)
Friday the 13th (First 4, same reason)

Star trek (any)

Real movies:

Tremors
Farenhiet 9/11
The guyver (silly I know)

Final Destination (not the second one)
Anime:

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Blood: The last vampire
Movies I hated so bad you can't see it:

Well I guess I could let myself get defensive here but ...ehh. I will try to explain.
Here is the hook; I strive to live as morally correct as I can based on objective standards. At different times in my life (pretty much when I was younger) I have thought about being a cop. I ruled this out on the potential (garaunteed) for moral contradiction. I have also watched with great curiosity, people who find themselves in moral contradiction (or moral chaos), and noted the psychological impact. So how does this pertain to the movie. Though certainly not a new theme (guilty conscience of a soldier), it is a strong moral component. Films that have a strong moral component get my attention. Even sometimes when it is not contextually accurate through and through.
Finally as an individualist I often find dealing with morally ambiguous people to be exhausting. Unfortunately I have, in my life, seen a lot of negative (immoral) behavior in people and watched as they attempted to rationalize it and even seek a consensus from those around them as a means of justifying the egregious behavior or action. When I saw the film I felt a metaphoric connection with the main character's disgust with his superior officer and with the policies of the system he was a part of.
Second I have to admit as a highly visual person (with skill sets that involve visual interpretation) and that the was so strikingly beautiful in a classic Japanese way (though I have no ethnic preference in women) I found myself studying her features for future refence. Being born and raised in the west, and being naturally curious, I am drawn to certain things in Asian cultures.
So that is why I put it in the second tier potion of my list. It was not good enough to be A list, but it had some personal significance.

About a month ago, in a thread about religious movies, I mentioned that the only one I liked was The Passion of Joan of Arc, by Carl Dreyer. For those of you who posted an interest in seeing it, it's on Turner Classic Movies at 12:30am EST on Monday-- i.e., late Sunday night. It's a slow, silent film, but Maria Falconetti's performance (her only performance on film) is riveting, and the dialogue is taken directly from Joan's trial in Rouen. A must-see for anybody who takes film seriously.

Small War: Seven Samurai
One-Man War: Yojimbo
Post-War: The Third Man
SciFi: The Terminator or Blade Runner, and Galaxy Quest for comedy
Cartoon: Spider-Man
Animation: South Park, Bigger, Longer, Uncut
Romance: Shop Around the Corner
Western: Destry Rides Again (comedy), Ride the High Country (drama)
Horror: The Vanishing (Dutch version)
Documentary: Gimme Shelter
Film-Noir: Maltese Falcon
Mystery: Rear Window
Fantasy: Lord of the Rings III (Return of the King) or Beauty and the Beast (Cocteau)
Musical: Singing in the Rain
Romance: Casablanca
Religion (can't skip that one): Passion of Joan of Arc
Action: maybe Die Hard

I'd say more special-effects good. Not that the story is bad, it's just that it mostly involves Tom Cruise and his kids hiding from aliens until the aliens get sick and die. But the movie overall is very suspenseful (and realistic, in the sense that that's how I'd picture events unfolding if aliens really did invade). I found the crazed and fear-driven humans were more frightening than the aliens themselves.

That's just good business and diplonacy so the Christ-psychotics and others under religion mental illness could enjoy the movie, forgetting about evolution and other more intelligent life forms inhabiting the Universe.
If I had produced the movie I would have placed a cross shaped deviced somewhere, made some of the aliens walk on water, some resurrect after holding the cross shape device and have some kind of last supper before our bacteria killed them.....:)
Did anyone see the Omega Man? ( 1970's movie) at the end he gives his blood in a container to his friends to save humanity from a devastating virus, while dying on a cross shape sculpture. Quite the symbolism...:)

I'd say special effects good, and that I'm the opposite; if the movie is about cool effects, I want to see it in the theater (big screen and sound). Although this is the first time Spielberg portrayed the aliens as evil instead of a Father/Guardian figure, which I find interesting.
