I have a question tell me what you guys think. As our society advances in science and becomes more advanced do you think atheist will increase in numbers once we have a better understanding of evolution.
In our current state of fear here in the US everything is at a standstill for awhile, that and the baby boomers have squashed creative thinking. I am confident that science will help with a healthy style of thinking leading to more athiest, but that process takes awhile. We already have a great understanding of evolution. religions are now fighting below the belt now because they have none of their own intellects to support them on bashing science. funny because all science is is a few steps with math, just like algebra.

This has been discussed on several threads but I'll add my opinion. Religion seems to quite easily ignore science and so do some religious people. In their minds a lot of scientific facts are inconclusive or absolutely made up.
Presenting more facts will not convince them. There's also the fact that we can never prove something like evolution beyond a shadow of a doubt.

I think that there could be several reasons for this. Some have suggested a 'god gene'. Others have talked about brainwashing or indoctrination.

I personally think that, for some people, believing in intelligent design is a kinder way for them to see the world. Humans instinctively avoid pain and seek out pleasure. For a lot of people, the evolution theory is 'painful'. No purpose, no direction and no leader.

Why do we tell children that their dead pet has gone to a better place? Because we want to shelter them from the pain of reality. That's what intelligent design can do for people.
