Hello everyone,
Hope you like my new 'avatar'.

Another poster from this forum presented something interesting and I woud like it to be expounded upon.

It was proposed that I should separate the subjective from the relative; Absolute from the Objective. That I shouldn't regard something subjective as being relative, that they are not the same thing. (same goes with the separation between absolute and objective). Seeing that a lot of you in here have very respectable minds, I wanted to see what you thought about that. I disagree, but I want to know what you all think.
Are they ( subjective and relative; Absolute and Objective) separate from each other?

They are not exactly the same. The subjective is a subset of the relative. Things can be relative without being subjective - the existence in quantum theory of Rindler particles (particles that exist or not according to whether you are accellerating) are an example of something that is relative but not subjective. (New Scientist, 1 Oct 2005). There is a case for them being relative but objective as any independently accellerating observer will get this result. Absolute is a theoretical subset of objective - Newton's laws are objective in that they predict the results of experiments everwhere independent of who does them, but they are not absolute as they are an approximation to Einsteinian motion and gravity, which in turn are believed to be an approximation to an as yet undiscovered theory of quantum gravity. I say theoretical as according to standard scientific methodology we are unlikely ever to know absoute truth but can approximate it arbitrarily closely. We can however know things are absolutely false.

Now this may or may not relate to morality, but the categories of relative, absolute, subjective, objective should still apply in the same way. I propose, as an atheist, that morality is certainly relative, but may possibly nonetheless be objective.

Next question.......

HI different tim,

I think it relates to morality, since eventually we would have to apply the same concepts. But I'll revisit that later.

I propose, as an atheist, that morality is certainly relative, but may possibly nonetheless be objective.
I think that's kinda like saying "jumbo shrimp". I propose, as a theist, that morality is objective and not at all relative. But i don't want to go into that since I just really want to stay focused on understanding the other posters' points on this issue. Particulary the original poster of the Idea.

But thanks, Tim.

Welcom, a different tim and lostineveryonestruths. Hope you enjoy our fair forum.

Swicked (:P), could we tell us why you don't think subjective/relative and objective/absolute are seperate things?

Hey, Rhinoqulous

Swicked (:P), could we tell us why you don't think subjective/relative and objective/absolute are seperate things?
I posted this because one of the other poster on this forum made the comment, so I wanted him/her to expound on it. That's it.
Are you asking me why I don't think Subjective and relative are not the same? (that's what I meant: my question was how is subjective and relative separate)

OK,
hope that cleared it up

lostineveryonestruths,

This is what I meant, it's why I told TIM that I don't want to go further. If we start this discussion, we'll clog up this thread with things we have already discussed in other threads. I'll be happy to talk about it elsewhere. I just wanted to see what you all thought and if anybody agreed with the original proposition.

hope I didn't kill your hopes of stomping me in the ground.

haha, that's funny....I didn't know your picture was of a burger...
Maybe we are meant to be friends. ;)

Now all we need is a "large drink" and we can be a value meal.
