Who's Your Favorite Scientist?

Who's your favorite scientist of all time? I'd personally have to go with Isaac Newton.

Ada Lovelace. Gotta love chicks who can program.

Nah, Craig Venter really. He was the first to sequence the human genome in all but technicality, has had his own genome sequenced, and has made a bacterium with an entirely synthetic genome. Apart from that, he's a real-life mad scientist with real mad-scientist projects - the bacterium project has potential to help with carbon sequestration and biofuel production amongst other things, but could also potentially be made into bioweapons. And he's got a beard and everything.

For me is Michio Kaku.

ocmpoma 02-23-2008 10:31 AM

I'll have to answer with a bit of a cop-out:

For me it's the grunts, the really nameless ones who, without publishing any mass-appeal books or making any major breakthroughs, daily further our understanding of the universe and our ability to improve upon our own lives.

Professor Chaos 02-23-2008 10:38 AM

This guy.

What, no votes for Kirk Camron and Ray Comfort?

VladTheImpaler 02-24-2008 03:48 AM

Michio Kaku here.

I really lke Carl Sagan for how poetic he was in The Cosmos series, but that doesn't say much about his science hes done.

Isaac Newton for being so damn clever. He was a Christian too. Did you guys know that Newton thought one of his greatest acheivements of his lifetime was his celibacy? I don't think that one be in even my top twenty of greatest acheivments., hell the fact that i just learned how to spell achievement ranked higher then celibacy, thats probably why i lost it at as soon as possible!

VladTheImpaler 02-24-2008 05:43 AM

Celibacy is not an acheivement, it's just stupid.

mmfwmc 02-24-2008 07:08 AM

It's certainly not hereditary.

Facehammer 02-24-2008 03:21 PM

Isaac Newton was off his fucking rocker, and I respect that. Apart from the celibacy that's already been mentioned, he spent a good portion of his later life huffing mercury vapour while cocking about with alchemy, and researching the occult and the apocalypse. He was also a total cunt, to the point of - and I only vaguely remember this - relentlessly hounding one chap to the point of suicide.

Despite this, he filled his time with gravity, optics, calculus, mechanics and combating counterfeit coin-makers. What a character.
