Checking the Wikipedia article on Crick, this wasn't really a belief, but a speculation, since he didn't feel like they had an adequate hypothesis for ambiogenesis at the time. With the introduction of new hypotheses for abiogenesis, he found out the directed panspermia idea much less likely.

Crick never believed aliens created life on earth, but at one point, he considered it a strong possibility. If I considered it a possibility that an intelligent being created the universe, does that automatically make me a theist?
