Oh, so you are of the "Evolution is Finished" group? You really think that each species strives toward perfection, and written somewhere (on whatever it is they write it on), is a list of the ultimate traits for each species that ever lived?
I bet you think neutral alleles don't have the potential to carry morphological traits in molecular stasis, where their mutative potential can be realized from an unknown future environmental selection pressure.
You would also disagree, I assume, that said environmental pressures have no effect on the genotype.
