Did they offer/have you tried lidocaine patches? They can work quite well for some patients offering targetted pain relief from broken ribs and may mean that you don't have to take as many opiates systemically.
Alternatively, sometimes there are nerve blocks such an intercostal block or a paravertebral block that an anaesthetist can perform under ultrasound guidance.
