I was watching a history TV program a few weeks ago and up came the subject of hanging, drawing and quartering, you know, as it does.
I always thought that the body was drawn and quartered after death as an insult to the dead body. How wrong I was.
Instead of a drop hanging, the person was pulled up into the air by a rope tied round the neck and hung until almost dead. Then, still alive, the body was allowed to fall to the ground where an incision was made in the stomach and the person disemboweled. Then, whilst still alive, the head was decapitated and the rest of the body quarted.
Who the hell dreams up such a death?
