When your minister says fear God, he isn't kidding. The good book has thousands of commands that would make fear the one emotion that you have more than any other. It seems clear all men are not created equal.
In Leviticus 12:2-8, the Lord told Moses to instruct as follows. 2: "Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child, then she shall be unclean seven days.." Verse 5 says, "But if she bear a maid child, then she shall be unclean two weeks.
In the book of Matthew 10:34-35 in verse 34, Jesus said, "Think not that I am come to bring peace on earth: I come not to send peace, but a sword." In verse 35, Jesus also says, "For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household."
It's no wonder to me that Christians are so different in their teachings on love and hate; yet we are most concerned about Muslims who want to kill Christians because Allah said to kill infidels, meaning any and all non-Muslims. Even though Muslims are told to kill the infidels, we have more in common with them than they know. If we could get together with the Muslim religious leaders and share our holy words with theirs, they would see just how much we have in common. Perhaps we have equal volumes of doctrines to share about jihad.
Is it any wonder why religions have so many conflicts with the gay community? Most people raised as Christians, either formally or informally, know the story of Lot and Sodom and Gomorra - where the Lord destroys two cities because they are full of homosexuals, allowing only one man, Lot, and his wife and daughters to escape.
When I read in Genesis about the angels being sent to warn Lot and his family of the impending doom of their city Lot invites the angels into his home. The angels must have been very good-looking as the story says the town's homosexuals set up camp near Lot's door in hopes of getting a date for the evening.
The story reads that Lot feared for the safety of these supernatural beings to the degree he offered to give the crowd of homosexuals his virgin daughters. If they wanted girls perhaps they were not so gay as he thought. The angel/daughter swap is in Genesis 19:1-8. In verse 8, Lot says, "Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes; only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof."
Now that should seem strange to anyone who has children; who would offer their children to any mob? I question God here, as he is perfect, I read, but here is where I get concerned about Lot's sanity. The angels were better equipped to protect themselves from a mob than were Lot's young daughters. The angels rendered their would-be dates blind, the Bible reports.
Even my Sunday school teachers left out the R-rated materials of this story. Lot's lifestyle sounds unusual when you think he was not destroyed with all the other folks in Sodom and Gomorra. God sure had a plan for him, but I'll not question the wisdom here as that would be a sin. Lot's wife dies for looking back, and Lot lives to be a father and a grandfather of the same children. Let's not blame Lot because the daughters "made" him drunk two full days as it is written in Genesis 19.

The Bible has the potential to be an evil book, but most Christians - with the exception of idiots like Pat Robertson - choose to selectively read the bits that are not so evil and pretend the rest doesn't exist.
Moreover, since it was originally written, there have been many versions and translations and a few parts have been removed. (In the Catholic Church the Bible is the Douay Bible consisting of 73 books. In the Protestant church only the 66 books approved by the Synod of Dordrecht in 1618, which today is known as the Authorized King James Bible, is used.)

Reminds me of one of my favorite Family Guy quotes. Stewie is reading a Bible that Peter's father gave him, and he says, "I love this 'God'. . .he's so. . .EVIL!"

Thanks for your welcome, miata. :)
I think that instead of a case where some parts of the bible are evil while others aren't, it's more of a case where the entire book is evil but some parts are not as evil as others. On average, the Old Testament is more evil than the New Testament.
While the Bible and Koran are equally evil, the main difference is that most Christians tend to not do exactly as the Bible says and kill all non-Christians, while Muslims seem intent on destroying all 'infidels'.
"He that rejecteth me, and receiveth not my words, hath one that judgeth him: the word that I have spoken, the same shall judge him in the last day." - John 12:48
"Allah may put all the impure ones [all non-Muslims] one on top of another in a heap and cast them into hell. They will have been the ones to have lost." - Koran, 8:37

If you are an atheist how can you say anything is evil? If there is evil that means there is a specific moral standard which means there is a God.

Let's not get into slurring the adherents of one crazy, dark age belief system more than the next. It's worth remembering that Islam has been the predominant religion of the Middle-East and North Africa for well over a thousand years, and yet we have only seen religion based violence directed against Western nations since the U.S and U.K decided to create a modern state of Israel, despite the fact that if the Kingdom of Judaea ever existed (I believe this is still a controversial subject amongst historians), it certainly hasn't for over two millenia. Displacing an entire population, supporting authoritarian regimes like Egypt, Iraq (before Saddam stopped doing what he was told), and Iran (before the Shah was chased out), and having American military bases all over the Middle-East are the causes of terrorism. Islam is just a handy tool to whip people into a frenzy in the Middle-East, just like Christianity is in America.

I believe there are several threads dealing with this. And I believe you repeat the same mindless drivel in each of them. The idea that evil only exists as what God defines as evil, would seem to imply that Christians are the ones who don't believe in evil. If God sent down an appendix to the Bible that said " You must sacrifice your firstborn son unto Me!", I assume that that would make human sacrifice perfectly alright?

I agree with Fryan. Certain things that are comdemned by the Bible, or any other 'holy' book, are only considered evil by the followers of that religion - e.g. blasphemy. But some acts are considered evil as they go against common morals. Murder is evil no matter whether you're a theist or atheist. And morals are not necessarily defined by religion - they're based more on cultural and philosophical concepts and beliefs.

You see, if God did that he would not be the God of the Bible.

But God has issued some equally evil instructions in the Bible.
"Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourself every girl who has never slept with a man." (Numbers 31:17-18)
"You will eat the fruit of the womb, the flesh of the sons and daughters the Lord your God has given you." (Deuteronomy 28:53)
"When the Lord delivers it into your hand, put to the sword all the males .... As for the women, the children, the livestock and everything else in the city, you may take these as plunder for yourselves." (Deuteronomy 20:13-14)

He didn;t seem to mind slaughtering the first born of the Egyptians either did he? And I seem to recall the Bible suggests God deliberately 'hardened Pharoah's heart' so as he kept refusing Moses' request to let the Israelites leave, thus making such punishments inevitable..
And how about the stoty of Jepthah? He foolishly vowed to God he would scrifice to him the first thing he saw on coming home (from a battle I think?) and it turned out to be his daughter... Surely God could have arranged it so it was something else if he doesn;t like human sacrifice?

Judges.29 ¶ Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed over Gilead, and Manasseh, and passed over Mizpeh of Gilead, and from Mizpeh of Gilead he passed over unto the children of Ammon.
.30 And Jephthah vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou shalt without fail deliver the children of Ammon into mine hands,
31 Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD'S, and I will offer it up for a burnt offering.
32 So Jephthah passed over unto the children of Ammon to fight against them; and the LORD delivered them into his hands.
33 And he smote them from Aroer, even till thou come to Minnith, even twenty cities, and unto the plain of the vineyards, with a very great slaughter. Thus the children of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel.
34 And Jephthah came to Mizpeh unto his house, and, behold, his daughter came out to meet him with timbrels and with dances: and she was his only child; beside her he had neither son nor daughter.
35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he rent his clothes, and said, Alas, my daughter! thou hast brought me very low, and thou art one of them that trouble me: for I have opened my mouth unto the LORD, and I cannot go back.
36 And she said unto him, My father, if thou hast opened thy mouth unto the LORD, do to me according to that which hath proceeded out of thy mouth; forasmuch as the LORD hath taken vengeance for thee of thine enemies, even of the children of Ammon.
37 And she said unto her father, Let this thing be done for me: let me alone two months, that I may go up and down upon the mountains, and bewail my virginity, I and my fellows.
38 And he said, Go. And he sent her away for two months: and she went with her companions, and bewailed her virginity upon the mountains.
39 And it came to pass at the end of two months, that she returned unto her father, who did with her according to his vow which he had vowed: and she knew no man. And it was a custom in Israel,
40 That the daughters of Israel went yearly to lament the daughter of Jephthah the Gileadite four days in a year.

God says worship me or die and go to hell. I do not think that is moral, it is rape.

If God modified the bible, he would then be the God of the revised bible, the new "one true bible".
