New Trial for Warren Jeffs
Grand child pimp daddy of the FLDS, Warren Jeffs, will have a second shot at freedom in 30 days. Utah's Supreme Court has decided that the jury that heard the case for His Ickiness received insufficient direction and that Mr Jeffs deserves a new hearing.
My paranoid inner voice can't help but wonder what kind of political shenanigans brought this high profile circus back into the limelight four years after the fact and at a key time during election season.

It makes you wonder if the Mormons don't need somebody crazier than they are to make their own image seem reasonable by contrast.

"I don't think Osama bin Laden sent those planes to attack us because he hated our freedom. I think he did it because of our support for Israel, and our ties with the Saudi family and all our military bases in Saudi Arabia. You know why I think that? Because that's what he fucking said! Are we a nation of 6-year-olds? Answer: yes." ~ David Cross

Is it me, or does it seem that, in general, highly religious folk somehow promote the rape of young people (children-teens)? I am thinking of the catlicker pedo priests, latter day wackos, jizzlams, and other looney cults where, inevitably, young people get raped by their elders. Or is it that pedophiles just see easy marks in the religiously susceptible or vulnerable? Or is it that the media just draws attention to such incidents where the religious are involved, due to the hypochristy? Does liking to fuck children or the pubescent exist equally across all segments of society, or is there a disproportionate representation among the fanatically religious? An impossible question, I guess. Just pondering.

I think that at least part of the effect you are observing is the natural blackout of information about non-belief. There is silence about the religion of a non-believer who heroically saves people from burning buildings or other disasters and there is religious silence about their religion when non-believers rape and otherwise abuse children.
Somehow it seems much better or much more awful, and so more shocking, "news-worthy", when a religious affiliation can be attached to the story.
A minor theft is ordinarily not news, but if the thief is a "man of the cloth", a "reverend", it is front page material.
That doesn't detract from the fact that certain social situations do attract the pedo-freaks and religions do have a pedo-sadistic component.

It's easier to get the kiddies to stay silent if you tell them Gawd WANTS them to be silent.

I think it's more a product of their isolation than of their religion. I'm sure if there were little remote ranches of Vegans or Jungians or refugee Keynesians we'd find funny clothes and kid diddling. That said, I can't think of a single strong subculture that whose primary adhesive wasn't religion.

Even easier if you hold their dear little heads under water for a good long while to purify their souls.
Cheaper, quicker and easier way is to give them thin plastic bags to play with.
Even better if they have already been told the joys of autoerotic asphyxiation.
