As the Olympics drew to a close, there was an interesting piece on the BBC about superstition helping with an athletes "winning mentality". I then found out that Jonathan Edwards, (once so evangelical he wouldn't train/jump on Sundays), has lost his faith and is now an atheist. For Americans here he was, is still I think, the world record holder for triple jump.
This revelation did make me think about the power of superstition in helping an athlete, or maybe an astronaut, politician, have the self belief in being able to win thanks to "god" being on their side.
