One of the most irrational of all the conventions of modern society is the one to the effect that religious opinions should be respected....That they should have this immunity is an outrage. There is nothing in religious ideas, as a class, to lift them above other ideas. On the contrary, they are always dubious and often quite silly.

Thanks, Eva. Can I have my old category back now instead of obsessed member?

Meanwhile, the religion of piss rumbles on unabated.

An explosion in Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan has killed at least 39 people, Afghan officials say.
Reports said the blast ripped through a wedding party on Wednesday evening, leaving another 70 more wounded.
Last week, Afghanistan held a national peace council

With (a great deal of) luck, they may discover that they are not at peace.

Afghanistan holding a peace council is like the Klan holding an African American history celebration.

I'm a bit torn about Canada's presence in Afghanistan. On the one hand, we've committed to helping out there. On the other, I don't think they really want to live in anything approaching a free society. Realistically, they will revert to a theocracy of one sort or another regardless of anything we do.

If there were prospects for long-term peace/prosperity/Good Things (tm) then I might tacitly support staying, but there isn't. What's the point?

Labor there must be dirt cheap. Maybe, if we relocate some industry to Afghanistan, we can not only help pay for our fighting there but it would give those folks an example of liberty and help them toward some little prosperity while giving us a clearly defined national interest to defend.

Get those "Blanket" (Afghan) people working on i-Pads so I can get one for USD $90 or so instead of $500.

I think the main (only?) problem with this is just how backwards the country is. This could work in Iraq, because it has the infrastructure for it. It was a modern-ish country that went through (military and guerrilla) years of war. Afghanistan has no such infrastructure, and the enemy forces have considerable influence over the local population.

I almost want to say that Afghanistan is unfixable and we should just let it develop/fail on its own.

Our collective efforts there are not about terrorism or the wish to make Afghanistan a ‘better, peaceful place’. I’d wager it’s about America's desire to control energy in Central Asia and promote corporate plans to plunder the region's reserves - but I’m just a cynical old conspiracy git!

Energy in Afghanistan? Unless they find a way to use goatshit to run our equipment, I don't think they have anything useful.

I was thinking more about the oil & gas pipelines from the Caspian Sea to Indian or Pakistani ports that would find it difficult to avoid Talibanistan or our friendly Iranians.

Goatshit technology - now there's an idea for a bit of entrepreneurism!

Right! And, once again, the mid-east sand-kickers have a monopoly on the world's main deposits.
