Evolving Hawaiian Crickets Lose Ability to Chirp

God did it. Yeah right.

The song-less males rely on the few male crickets with "normal" wings. By congregating around a serenading male, the silent crickets enable females to find and mate with them.

Apparently, they've evolved the ability to cock-block, too.

I was thinking about that too. My theory is as follows: The crickets lose their ability to chirp, and so the parasitic flies can't find them to reproduce and then begin to die out. After a period of time I think the few remaining crickets that can chirp would have an advantage (and less flies about), and so would begin to repopulate the area with chirpers. And then the whole thing starts all over again.

It'd be really interesting if they started to evolve the ability to attract mates by pheromones.
