For some books like that, I have to pause then go and read up on something, then get back into it. So it's not reading one book, it's like reading a small library.

Indeed. Penrose has written the main body of the book as "accessible" - with detailed equations and complex stuff for experts in a huge appendix which I doubt will get much of my attention.
