This summer, I enrolled in a university course named Myth, Religion, and Self. Today was the first day of class. It seems as though it is instructed by a professor who doesn't bend over backwards to appease theists. And guess what? Part of the required readings include God Delusion and Abraham on Trial by Carol Delaney. AND it appears that the professor doesn't get butthurt when someone expresses an opinion different from his own.

I'm in heaven and I just wanted to share that. kthankbai.

I grew up watching The Bob Newhart Show in the 70s, and my Tivo has been picking up late night reruns lately, does that count?

I think there comes a time in everyone's life where they say to themselves "This religion thing is silly. Why don't I just become a jedi?"

Unfortunately some people don't grow out of that phase.

I imagine most of you here probably know about this already, and it's not exactly breaking news to me, but damn it, it's freaking hilarious.

More virtuous than most religions. Hopefully you aren't suggesting that it's not as valid. After all, I can't remember ever reading about a Jedi raping children, or hanging gay people from cranes.

It may be virtuous compared to some, but it's religion so it's not off to a flying start in the 'being valid' sweepstakes.
Add onto that its seemingly purely online status, whose 'grand masters' are known by their online (and assumingly video game) names, the fact that said 'grand masters' have about as much knowledge of the mystical workings of the universe as anyone who can put in a dvd of 'star wars' and you've got yourself one hell of a situation.

But you're right, they probably don't hurt children. Unless they think they're a sith. i mean anakin did it, right?

I agree, but you are making a comparative judgement of the crazy and I think it's based mostly on familiarity and the popular opinion of theists, who are, in my opinion, disqualified as judges.

*shrug* The media of the day. The media of the day 160 years after Christs supposed existence was scrolls.

Again, I wonder how they are less qualified than a cluster fuck of anonymous Roman con men (or con man - probably named Paul) writing about a flesh giving zombie who created himself by fucking his mother.

If only the Grand Masters had adopted a more believable story.

Motherfuckers are highly underrated. Jesus Leprechaun must have thought himself the big shit, sucking on his mother's tit, crowing to himself, "Who's your daddy?"

You may be on to something.

In college I took a class on subcultures of the late 18 and early 1900's. At that time there were tons of people going off into the west to try out their philosophies - socialists, anarchists, group marriage people, exclusive races. Here is the thing that is kind of disturbing. Only the groups that had a religious foundation endured beyond the original group. The Mormons and the Oneidans.

I've never known what to make of that, but perhaps persecution or suffering is essential to transcending generational commitment.
