I can understand quite easily how some folk in times of crisis turn to their imaginary friends for support and thank him wildly if the outcome is good, whilst conveniently forgetting how the scabby deity did fuck all to prevent the crisis in the first place.
I have no real problem (apart from an occasional cringe) when people's faith gets reported - it's usually where I stop reading. However, this piece did get on my tits more than usual:

They would have been better off speaking to chaplains about the role religion plays in helping people to cope with adversity. And it does help. We know this now from research.

For example, people who practise a religion live longer on average than those who don't. One reason for this is that they tend to be healthier because they're less likely to abuse drugs or alcohol, for instance.

Religious believers are also less likely to commit suicide, or succumb to depression. They recover faster from serious illness. They get over a bereavement faster.

It allows them to hope against hope when the odds are stacked against them, and when all is lost, it allows them to accept that fact, not to rage against it, and to seek forgiveness for any wrong they may have done and therefore go to God in peace.

But research shows that, on average, it is better in these situations to have a religious faith and it is completely natural to think of God and to pray in such circumstances because religion is a natural and ineradicable part of human nature.

I though our Irish chums were showing signs of shedding much of their old catlick baggage - but with writers like Quinn expressing such garbage in a respected publication, it does show there's still a long way to go.

Lots of religious people don't actually practice a religion. They may not even have a specific religious affiliation, but they're still nominally superstitious, Christian in outlook and/or believe in an all-purpose, personal deity.

I don't think it's reasonable to call these people atheists but, as we've seen with one of our newest theist members here, such non-skeptics are often classified as atheists.

Otherwise, I would be curious to know the source of the scholarship Mr. Quinn consulted for his conclusions. Does he cite any that extend beyond the general label of "research shows?"

And speaking of the formerly trapped Chilean miners who were recently rescued, I wonder if the miner who was reunited with his mistress practiced a religion before the mine collapse?

I wonder, was he a nominal Roman Catholic or was he a principled atheist who shunned all the praying and bargaining with an invisible deity that likely was going on in that mine shaft?

Origins of superstitions are caused by malfunctioning brains unable to tell between fantasy & reality. Children live in a world of differentiation between what is real & what is not, ( fantasy vs tangible reality) which is normal in the maturing of the brain, but if they grow up & still have those fantasies accepting them as reality they are deemed retarded ( not unlike people suffering from deep religious faith)

Since superstitions cause an influx in dopamine, serotonin & oxytocin, they will cause an addiction to fairy tales of ALL kinds.Mostly those of religious belief inculcated in their brains by their parents, schools, peers & society. This is called deep religious belief in Orgasm producing ( indirectly or directly) imaginary friends found in ALL religions.

After all the mind is created by the brain, an extremely sensitive instrument, the slightest anomaly can induce belief in god or bizarre delusions which are found in naturally malfunctioning schizophrenia affected brains, those under drugs or those which have suffered trauma.
