I just (re)started the great Samuel Johnson biography. It mentions the Old Mitre -- apparently that's where he frigging met Boswell. Awesome, as the kids say.

here you go- this is as good a place as any to have a laugh

Quote:
The British Humanist Association (BHA) has called on the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums, North Somerset Council, Visit Britain and South West England to take action on Noah’s Ark Farm Zoo in North Somerset. The zoo, which advances creationism, seeks to discredit a wide variety of established scientific facts that challenge their religious views, such as radio carbon dating, the fossil record and the speed of light. Andrew Copson, BHA Director of Education and Public Affairs, noted ‘We believe Noah’s Ark Farm Zoo misleads the public by not being open about its creationist agenda in its promotional activities and by advancing misunderstandings of the natural world. We have therefore asked the South West England and Visit Britain tourist boards to stop promoting the zoo. As they are pubic bodies we believe it is inappropriate that they should support establishments that seek to urge religious or ideological beliefs upon people in these ways. ‘As Noah’s Ark Farm Zoo threatens the public understanding of the natural world we have asked the local authority, who issues the zoo with its license, to ensure that the zoo’s education practices are inline with relevant government and other guidelines. Although the zoo has been refused membership of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria, it is a member of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums. We have requested that they also ensure the zoo meets their own educational guidelines’. Notes For further comment or information, contact Andrew Copson on 020 7079 3584 or 07534 248 596. The British Humanist Association (BHA) is the national charity representing and supporting the non-religious and campaigning for an end to religious privilege and to discrimination based on religion or belief. It is the largest organisation in the UK working for a secular state.

Anthony and Christina belong to a local Anglican Church, where Anthony continues as a Lay Reader. In 1997 they rebuilt the old 17th century farm buildings of Moat House Farm and prepared to open Noah's Ark, as a themed animal park, for adventure, education and to remind visitors of the ancient tradition of God's relationship with mankind; and of the contemporary science that points to Creation plus evolution of species.

Despite being a pleasant and mild mannered git - if I had a few beers and visited a place like that - I'd end up smacking some bonehead and getting arrested.

Set it up psycho! - I wonder if I can get in half price by lying badly about my age?

Still in the tentative stages at this point, but a mid- to late October jaunt across the pond is looking likely. Would be breezing through London, natch, and points south, with some moments in the Isle of Wight (if it's not too dear).

Be nice to have a pub night with the lads, if possible. And the lasses (PsychoD?) too, so it's not a bangerfest. (Not that there's anything wrong with that)

My window for a meet-up is a small one; I expect to be in London on 13 or 14 November. Would love to have a pint (NB: "a pint" = minimum 3 imperial pints of warm, flat beer or ale) and be hugged by interested and hygienic transponders.

The rest of my UK sojourn (9-12 Nov) will be motoring around the south looking for petrol and a spare tyre for the boot.
