Redifing Atheism?
I know this idiot's definition of atheism is wrong but I don't know how to counter his argument because he tries to use the root meaning of the word in Greek and I don't know any Greek. A little help? I am I wrong on my intuition here?

Well, he's certainly wrong on this claim:
Quote:
A real atheist is not one that merely lacks a belief in God. A genuine atheist is one that affirms there is no God.
|
This doofus is merely attempting to place the burden on atheists to "disprove" theists' allegations.
The incredulous are not required to do that. Theists, like all others who make assertions, bear responsibility for affirming their own claims. Theists never do, of course.
They speculate and preach their "faith" in things uknown, but they're not actually in a position to affirm the unknowable. No one is.

Welcome to the forum Chrislebon,
He's an idiot.
As Irre said above, the idiot is making an idiot's move by attempting to divert the attention away from the idiot's lack of evidence for his idiotic claim.
By the way, he's an idiot.

It's not surprising. As this article states:
Quote:
There is, unfortunately, some disagreement about the definition of atheism. It is interesting to note that most of that disagreement comes from theists — atheists themselves tend to agree on what atheism means. Christians in particular dispute the definition used by atheists and insist that atheism means something very different.

Religion - it gives people hope in a world torn apart by religion.

Right at the top:
Quote:
the idiot wrote
All too often on the street I run into people that are self-proclaimed Atheists but, when pressed to give a response as to why they believe that “God does not exist” they recant: “I never said I believe that ‘God does not exist’ I simply lack a belief in God’s existence.”
|
- how they focus our disbelief on an idea called god. Amazing!
thank goodness he's on our side

As uncomfortable as it might feel sometimes, like a forgotten buttplug, that doesn't stop them from being fools for His sake.

Anyone else got that sneaking suspicion that the n00b is talking about himself?

I won't respond to the initial question because you've all done it so nicely, but does anyone else get the feeling this is a hit-and-run?
One of those "Oh, I just happened across this argument that someone that totally isn't me wrote, you should look at it. It's not me, I swear. Really. I just stumbled upon it." types.
Maybe I'm wrong.

Actually, since this thread is open...
From what people keep telling me it goes something like this:
though if anyone thinks this is wrong, let me know.

One believing it is possible for something to exist or not, is different to believeing or not believeing something does exist. The dilema is not even knowing what the hell may or may not exist, or may or may not be possible to exist. My brain now hurts.
