A December Night
On a December night,
Hushed and blanketed white,
We crunched out across the snow,
Pulling our sleds as fast as we could go,
The heavenly flakes floating around,
Spreading more blanket on the ground,
Our pant legs stiff and creaking,
We, like wandering shepherds, seeking
A sign, something divine,
Beyond a field afar,
A snow-covered hill,
A ride, a thrill.
We might find it again, by and by,
Were we to seek, were we to try.
~ Daniel F Mitchell

This is not my work, it was posted over at Pharyngula by Cuttlefish in the comments for PZ's death of Oral Roberts post. It's comment #207 for those that want a lookie.

There are people engaging in quarrels
Who may show they are lacking in morals
Who is bad? Who is worse?
You will learn in this verse
That the basest position is Oral's
It made me LOL.

Made me chuckle too! Oral Roberts croaked today at the ripe old age of 91. What a vile conman! How will Christianity survive without him?

To Bathe in Eternal Rain
Do you fear to be free?
Are you afraid to fly,
To be, but not to be,
To be born as you die,
To bathe in eternal rain,
To wash off this mud,
You, clad in pain,
Imprisoned in flesh and blood!

To The Victor
Death, I defy thee!
My passionate breath
Warms thy sunless embrace.
Taste defeat then,
You uncompromising fiend,
For I rebuke thee!
My victory is won
Before I have lost,
For I have lived!
And eternity’s darkness
Cannot erase the mark
My soul has engraved upon it.

The Rosen Arbor
Stand beneath the rosen arbor tonight,
Harbored in a sanctuary of love,
Within a lattice of silver moonlight,
And bask in ardor showered from above.
Out beyond the sleeping grass, shadows drape
Branches barren and bereft of bird song,
To the weeping gaze void of will or shape –
Shades of gray which divide not right from wrong.
Yet, safe in the bosom of affection
You bide in the fold of this sacred place,
In the embrace of scattered reflection
Of purest love proffered no other space.
For strong is the structure framed by the heart,
That hate cannot mar nor time tear apart.

goodies!
One of the most irrational of all the conventions of modern society is the one to the effect that religious opinions should be respected....That they should have this immunity is an outrage. There is nothing in religious ideas, as a class, to lift them above other ideas. On the contrary, they are always dubious and often quite silly.

How Drear!
Brothers and sisters of yesteryear,
Asleep beneath the wistful trees,
Can you feel my mortal fear
Born upon the timeless breeze?
To you beneath those mounds so bleak,
Reposed at your eternal ease,
Sacrosanct in thought I speak,
With heartfelt but unspoken pleas.
How drear to think the worth of breath
Is measured by the girth of death!

One of Slimer's offerings crashed, chewed & spat out my i-plod this morning - it must be a sign.

Thanks, Eva. I wrote this poem on the back of a technical drawing while sitting on a stone under a tree next to a graveyard in Hsinchu Taiwan a couple of weeks back. I just happened to get abandoned there for about an hour while my friend searched for a parking spot. She apologized for making me wait, then looked suspiciously at me and then at the graveyard, when I smiled and gave her a cryptic look. She kept looking at me oddly for the rest of the day. Finally, I said, "Do you believe in ghosts?" She said in near panic, "Daniel! Don't say that I don't want to see ghosts!"
