Vote Selling

Should it be legal to sell your vote to other people? If so, why? If not, why not?

Discuss.

I'd prefer to see how that would work out in Canada first.

No thanks.

Always question all authorities because the authority you don't question is the most dangerous... except me, never question me.

i would. does caveat emptor still apply?

One of the most irrational of all the conventions of modern society is the one to the effect that religious opinions should be respected....That they should have this immunity is an outrage. There is nothing in religious ideas, as a class, to lift them above other ideas. On the contrary, they are always dubious and often quite silly.

Hypothetically, individual voters.

Suppose there were an election where you are (I'll assume the UK). Imagine any of the political parties running for office, or other private citizens (or even teh evil corporations!!!) could contact you to buy your vote, for whatever price you (and they) were happy with, or you could turn them down and vote however you want, or not vote at all.

After the sale, you lose your vote and the buyer gains a vote (i.e., has two votes, or however many votes they have purchased). They can use it however they want; by voting for their preferred candidate, not-voting, or re-selling the vote to a third party).

I prefer the method were you stand outside the booth with a bunch of thugs and threaten people in the queue or their family members with extreme violence. Its a lot cheaper in the long run.

I don't think there would ever be any overlap between what I would be willing to accept and what they would be willing to pay. Right now they spend $18/eligible voter.

Firstly, well done for including the word vote so many times into a post.
Of course I would sell mine, all the oarties are the same in the end so short termism regarding my own profit probably isn't that bad an idea.

But does that mean you think it should be illegal, and if so, why? What kind of price would you be looking for?
