Do You Carry a Knife
There was a story on Reddit about a week ago. You may have seen it. An American purchased a pocket knife for their Danish friend and the recipient was very put off and refused the gift.
I found that very surprising as I carry a multi tool with a blade on it and have since college. Most of the women I know and most of the men carry some kind of knife.
I was curious if the folks here carry knives and if not what do you do when you need to open a box, open a bottle, turn a screw, pry something, cut something, whatever?

I have a multi-tool that I keep in my bag (along with a flashlight and an assortment of various other odds and ends that I use occasionally).
I also received a pocket knife in high school. It's not as though we all have knife fights or anything, it's just that we all have knives... it's the local culture.

I don't know about Denmark, but in Thailand and elsewhere in Asia it's a faux pas to give a knife as a gift. In Japan, it's believed to be symbolic of severing the friendship or some shit. I gave my god-daughter (that's right, I'm a godfather--I had to formally reject Satan to become one) a gorgeous Swiss Army knife last year.
I haven't carried a knife since I was ten. In an urban setting, there's never any need for one outside the home, where I have knives, bottle openers, corkscrews and some filthy pipe cleaners.

When I'm working I always have a sheetrock knife (boxcutter) in my right back pocket. As for owning a multi-tool, I've owned a Swiss Army Knife in the past, but now I have a 3/4 ton van filled with every tool ever created by mankind (except for a multi-tool), so I have no need of one of those.

I don't carry a knife, never have. In my experience, it seems that city people (such as myself) are less likely to carry knives or multitools of some kind than more rural people.
Any time I have a need for a knife, I either have one that I can use (at home or at work), or I use whatever is handy that can be applied (like a screwdriver or pen to open a box).

I've had so many Swiss army thingies confiscated at check-in, that I gave up carrying one. Now I have a miniature screwdriver in my bag for when my specs fall apart. Airport security doesn't seem to bother about 'em!

my partner and i have found that we can't live without those multi-tools. we REALLY use them all the time.
One of the most irrational of all the conventions of modern society is the one to the effect that religious opinions should be respected....That they should have this immunity is an outrage. There is nothing in religious ideas, as a class, to lift them above other ideas. On the contrary, they are always dubious and often quite silly.

I used to carry a multi-tool with me all the time, it was incredibly handy in my line of work. About 3 years ago I broke it in half trying to pry open a server case, haven't had one since. When I was younger, in my teens and early 20's I used to carry a 3-1/2 inch lock-blade everywhere I went. As alluded to earlier, I did grow up in a rather rural setting and it was quite common for people to carry knives of the sort that I carried.

I think you guys are right about rural = multi tool but not about rural = knife. The nastiest small knives I've ever seen were on the key rings of women Whispers age in the SF Bay Area. There it was all the rage to tote those box cutters with the curved blade and it seemed like the smaller the chick the bigger the cutter.
In any case, I still find passing up the opportunity to play MacGyver bewildering. One of lives greatest joys.

every time you read the word "multi-tool" you get a boner, i know. but some people mean something other than that....

Carry a multi-tool wherever I go. It's made out of titanium, don't know what I'd do without it.

I just remembered something. When I was a teenager living in Germany I had a genuine switchblade knife. It was the classic style with a white pearl handle. My Army brat friend and I went shopping for knives on the streets of Heilbronn one day and we both bought one. It was a fun knife. I must have opened that thing fifty trillion times. It looked a lot like this one only pearlier, like the pearl on a drum kit:
I have no clue what happened to that knife. Course, we smoked a lot of hash in those days, so who can say.
