I often wonder if there is any discernible outrage to such stories in Saudi Arabia, or do the vast majority of Saudi Arabians prefer to live this way? If they are at all inclined to change, I wonder how many generations it might take and what would be the ramifications?

Oppression is certainly the word! The Saudi mutawa, or religious police, is a feared bunch of thugs that patrol the streets and ensures adherence to the crazy traditional rules – whilst the ruling elite and idle locals enjoy the pleasures they claim are ruining the decadent west! Throughout the country I’ve witnessed these bastards out on foot patrol with huge canes, whipping poor sods into the mosque at prayer times. I’m convinced the bum sniffing would soon start to fall if the mutawa didn’t actively employ their 5-a-day persuasion tactic.

Is there outrage at stories that make us squirm? – they certainly get reported, but there’s no mechanism for complaint or protest. Sharia ‘law’ is so rigidly applied, the locals have become de-sensitised to some of its craziness. The freedoms and choices we take for granted just don’t and can’t exist in a society dominated by enforced inherent inequalities. Turkish style secularism is a long way off for the poor sods.

Social change is happening, but it’s painfully slow. I can’t see them resisting the influence of global travel and electronic communication for ever. Perhaps the real world will stop groveling and accepting their nonsense when the black and gassy stuff starts running low.

See, Cal, many of us are not ignorant of the origin of the word "thug". The people you refer to are the "thugee" who were a scourge in their time. However, the word has acquired a modern meaning that makes the origin quite irrelevant and its arcane details useless in this context.
