America wasn't found for strictly religious reasons. Actually, I think about 1/3 of the first 13 colonies were founded for religious reasons. The southern colonies were founded as a place to send debtors. The middle colonies were founded for profit, excluding Pennsylvania founded by the Quakers. The northern colonies were religiously motivated however.

irrelavant of what reasons the colonies were founded, only about 7% of the people living on the colonies belonged to a church

Back when the colonies were around (before 1776) America was not a country. It was a series of "colonies" (theres that word again!) of Britan.

Only AFTER 1776, when we declared independence, did we become a country. And then once we ratified our Constitution, America became a secular nation.

"Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between man and his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legislative powers of government reach actions only, and not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between church and State."

-Thomas Jefferson, letter to Danbury Baptist Association, CT., Jan. 1, 1802

The fact that most of the colonists were debtors shows through in the amendments about the justice system. Debtors in Europe were screwed big time. They were jailed, had all their property taken, and practically given no chance to ever pay back. So, amendments five through eight pretty much covered that and protected them from being punished by law in excessive ways.

There are two ways to look at it. Legally, The US is a secular nation, but socially, we are mostly christian. God is mentioned all the time in our society. I've noticed it a lot latley. Try and count the number of times you hear the word god used seriously in one day.
