I Almost asked Sam Harris a question
Yup, Sam had gone before I arrived. The loss was mine but others let him know how much we appreciate his books. And thanks to Professor Chaos for setting this up.
What I do want to say, even if Sam doesn't read it, is that he, Richard Dawkins, Steve Jones and so many others have made being an atheist so much less lonely and risky than it used to be. And while Sam hits hard, he hits clearly. And we need that.
Sanctimonious religiosity loves obfuscation, it hides in the shadows of the mind while implying wisdom, it clings to a myth of truth and kindness while pursuing a self serving contempt for the very people it is supposed to be helping. What has surprised me is the extent to which atheism thrives in the USA - a country whose bible belt is widely regarded as beyond the reach of reason.
The more people say, "I am an atheist" openly and without apology the more will religion have to confront the questions being posed about belief in an imaginary friend.
Thanks Sam.

What are you talking about? Are you referring to the visit by Sam on this forum. That was a while ago.

Can't we get Hitchins in here for a evening, or Pat Condell?
Dawkins even?

At risk of sounding negative; do we really need them? I might be alone in this sentiment, but unless we're discussing evolutionary biology I don’t see the great appeal in discussing atheism with Richard Dawkins over for instance with nkb. What new and brilliant stuff could they possibly impart on us that we haven’t read or seen before in regards to atheism? Just because they are famous don’t make their word on atheism all that much more interesting, to me anyway.
However, having for instance Richard Dawkins as a guest to discuss evolutionary biology would be fuckin’ awesome.

i'll take him over you anytime, vlad.
One of the most irrational of all the conventions of modern society is the one to the effect that religious opinions should be respected....That they should have this immunity is an outrage. There is nothing in religious ideas, as a class, to lift them above other ideas. On the contrary, they are always dubious and often quite silly.

I seriously doubt that, in my youthfulness I have a perpetual libido ready to satisfy your needs. I also have the right amount of experience, you know, not so unfamiliar with the territory that I don’t know what I’m doing, yet also fresh enough that my vigour will inspire you to new orgasmic heights. Also I can… oohhh, right! Yes, of course, in any intellectual debate I’d take Dawkins over me as well if that was an option.
