obligatory introduction

I was honestly just procrastinating a political science paper (about freedom of religion, ironically enough) when I stumbled upon this here forum, and then this thread. So, I figured I'd say a quick "hello" and introduce myself.

My name is Erika, and I'm from little ol' Providence, RI. I'm 17, and still in high school. I haven't been Catholic since 7th grade, I haven't believed in a god since 10th grade, but I've only considered myself an atheist for about a year now. It's funny how its so much easier to admit that you don't believe in god than to admit that you're an atheist. Anyway, no one besides my family besides my mother and brother know of my lack of faith - mostly because I have a family of Catholic Colombians (if you're of Hispanic descent, you can appreciate just how ridiculously devout a Hispanic family can be).

Anyway, I've found that I'm starved for stimulating conversation. I know 2 other atheists besides myself, and the rest are either pretty religious or just apathetic. I think if it wasn't for the internet, my brain would've shut down from sheer frustration by now.

Now, I should probably be getting back to that poly-sci paper...

the only good thing about hispanic religionists is that they also believe in the chupacabras.
hail me!

welcome to our humble forum....

One of the most irrational of all the conventions of modern society is the one to the effect that religious opinions should be respected....That they should have this immunity is an outrage. There is nothing in religious ideas, as a class, to lift them above other ideas. On the contrary, they are always dubious and often quite silly.

Little Rhody has the highest concentration of Roman Catholics of any state (65% of the population). Leaving the Church in the 7th grade, then going full atheist (i.e., 'throwing the Baby out with the holy water') in the 10th sounds about right. Welcome to reality, and the forum.
