I keep thinking about Sternswallow: he had to have been posting almost to the day he died, I think, and I caught no inkling of his physical state from his posts. He must have passed away rather suddenly. I miss him here, and I hope he was surrounded by friends and family in his last moments.

Thanks for the link, it was great to revive the memories of that trip. I am very sad to learn that Stern has died. He was a great guy.

Hey!!! Miss ya a lot!!
And yes, a very sad loss.....what an extraordinary man, sternly was.....what a great meet up....

Looks like I missed out on a really great guy. My condolences to all who knew him. It sounds like he was a hoot.

Just spoke with Sterny's caregiver, who conveyed that he passed peacefully in his sleep at xmas in the company of his family. They fought to avoid any autopsy and his wish to have his body donated for scientific research was fulfilled.
All's well that ends well

Thanks, Kate. It's comforting to know that good ol' Sterny was surrounded by his family and appeared relatively comfortable in his final moments.
I still miss what he used to bring to these discussions, though we still have the posthumous benefit of his keen insight, wisdom and good-natured orneriness liberally sprinkled throughout this beloved forum.

Thank you Kate for the news as well as taking the time to find out everything you did.

Ahh, good ol' Sterny - I'm sure he'd be aiming for an easter demise, with rights reserved on a resurrection, but doing his stuff at christmas is pretty impressive. Good to see the family got their way on donation to science too.

"Holy Ghost, Batman! It's a voicemail from beyond!!"
I admit to staring at the phone for a minute, thinking "uh oh".

very nice of her....if it was the same caretaker as he had when sternacuse was happening, we know she was a great person and helped him organize it too.
thanks kate for letting us know...

Sad news indeed. Even though I only knew him for a short time, he quickly earned my respect, and will be missed. An amazing individual to say the least.

As a once regular poster my contributions have now receded to the status of "rare" but I do occasionally look in and tonight I feel ashamedly late in adding to this remarkable and touching litany of love for our great Stern.
I am deeply saddened by this news. I shall miss him. I love that even now after he has gone, the situation in which I find myself grieving for him, he is making me think: How can I feel such loss and sadness for someone who I’ve never even met yet feel that I knew well?
Being “across the pond” I was never able to actually meet Stern in person (like some lucky few) although we did discuss in private messages our mutual wish to one day be able to meet. He hoped to once again return to “Merrie Old England” at a pleasant and opportune time such as when spring “reach[ed] its full flowering.” Sadly it was not to be.
I knew him as a patient, erudite, fiercely intelligent and witty man and I knew him only through his words. I love that about Sterny.
It is at the same time deeply saddening, but also inspiring and comforting to know that although Stern has gone, he has left in his wake not only an impressive and inimitable trail of articulately and meticulously battered and broken bad arguments but also swathes of friends spanning the globe who will continue to remember him so fondly as they miss him.
My being aware of his long illness only through private communication and rather late in the day I think was testament to his stoicism and the fortitude of his mind that never once hinted at dulling. He shone to the very last and what I love even more about the man is that in donating his body to science he has not yet finished giving and will continue to help others question, wonder, learn and be thankful for his life.
Rest in peace my friend.
Invisibility and nothingness look an awful lot alike.
