It's worth pointing out that the Muslims in the area clearly sent girls to school before the Taliban moved in, so it's not a function of poverty or local conditions - it's a radical ideology that has taken over.

That said, it's hard not to find Islam and the Islamic world at fault for a lot of misogyny. It's incredible the amount of things that we take for granted in the West that just don't exist in even the most liberal and secularized Middle Eastern countries.

But what are the conditions that have allowed this radical ideology to flourish? Even in repressive Saudi Arabia, girls are at least allowed to attend school without fear of violent reprisals.

Yes, they may attend school, but if the school is on fire, they cannot leave unless properly dressed.

Women are not allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, the burden of transporting female students to schools has traditionally fallen on the men. These girls schools are staffed by women only, both in the teaching and administration departments. They recently ran into a conundrum; after purchasing school buses to transport the girls, who would drive the buses? Not the women; they can't drive. So, they adjusted their rules to allow unrelated men behind the wheel of the buses.

Saudi Arabia Discovers School Busing for Girls

You are right; women aren't as marginalized in Saudi Arabia as they are in Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, but their rights there are still substandard.

Don't be such a douche Ten, it clearly states in the quran (or however the fuck it is spelled) that woman may not operate motor vehicles. It's right there after the bit about not using separate providers for digital TV and internet access, and just before the part that says all inbound spacecraft must pass over mecca and dip their wings before landing on the planet.

I know it's not the answer you're looking for, but from a certain perspective, the geography is such that bands of militants can very easily evade organized authorities, thereby allowing them to make threats like that. They know no one can do anything about it.

I don't get the impression that in Pakistan this is something that the local people support at all - before US Predator drones started blowing up villages, anyway.

Actually, that makes sense, whoneedscience. At least it explains, in part, how such a radical ideology is allowed to flourish in Afghanistan. Apparently, there's really no one to stop the ruling warlords from being paranoid and respressive shits. Kinda like a "Lord of the Flies" scenario. There is no kind and benevolent authority to watch over them. How ironic.

When I read this atrocity I thought of Hitchens. He's been an Iraq War cheerleader and apologist since day one and the Kurds are supposed to be the good guys.

Quote:
"This is the practice of the Kurdish people for as long as anyone can remember," said the mother, Aisha Hameed, 30, a housewife in this ethnically mixed town about 100 miles north of Baghdad. "We don't know why we do it, but we will never stop because Islam and our elders require it."

So what else is new?

Say, wanna know why Hypatia (my avatar) was killed by an angry Christian mob? Because she was going to tell other women just how big 6 inches really was.

Just a note:

There is still alot of discrimination in the US against women. Most of it goes by completely unnoticed because we're so used to it. The pattern, as it appears to me, is definitely the religious influence in our country.

Same with Islam. Except it is more noticeable because it is allowed to be so extreme. And I do believe it is fear of "pussy power." I think the mindframe is something like this - "If we let them get educated, then they'll start thinking, then organizing, then we lose control." And who wants to lose control? Hey, if guys are getting all excited (bad pun intended) over Viagra pills to maintain "authority" over women by fucking them, clearly control is crucial. I don't think its the pussy itself, but more the loss of control over a gender that they were always allowed to do whatever they wanted with. That kind of unquestioned power - just for being born in a culture that happens to revere male domination - goes to a person's head. And as it is so excepted, nay, considered the laws of their religious beliefs that govern them, it does not surprise me that they would try to reel women back in where they can keep a closer eye.

Religion. Always there to help us discriminate against SOMEONE.
