Electronic Bods
Not really a deep and sophisticated thread like what all the others are.
But it just occurred to me to ask. are there any electronics people on the forum.
I have a research project I'm starting and need a bit of advice about some electrickery kit.
Speech processor module hooked up to a pressure pad - all in a stand alone 50mmx50mmx25mm (approx) unit no more than 12vdc, (speech input and output).
Important thing is cheap....... has to be cheap to put together. (any acad schematics would be groovy too).
well, if you don't ask you don't get..... innit.
Cheers

Sol, what are you trying to accomplish with that equipment? If you're trying to run your computer by talking instead of typing, I have an idea, but I can't tell from what you said.

Yes, that's what I was getting. But hands free doing what, exactly?

Only guessing here, but Sol's profile says he is a canine behaviourist. So the combination of speech tech and pressure pad would make me think it might be something to do with seeing how they react to the spoken word activated by the pressure pad in the absence of humans.

I thought that just meant he could lick his own balls and that he often makes feeble attempts to bury his poo.

Very possible. Either that or he studies the behaviour of some teeth.

The cruel treatment of poor Sol in here is outrageous
At least one of us here is prepared to offer some genuine help.
Sol, have you considered butchering Sarah, the Hebrew speakin doll?
"Sarah is dressed in a blue short-sleeved T-shirt and a pink mini A-line dress. Her dress matches her pink handbag which is attached to her right hand. She is wearing white socks and black platform Mary-Jane shoes."
thank goodness he's on our side

I would recommend a micro controller with a speech synthesizer.
Maybe this is something along the lines of what you want.
Microcontrollers are small, single chip computers. Instead of wiring and soldering circuits you write programs. Arduino is a very popular family of single board controllers with digital and analog inputs and outputs on the board. They give away a rather good and complete set of software including a complete environment for development. Additional expansion is through what they call shields, standard boards that attach to the Arduino microcontroller. So what you would want is an "Arduino speech synthesizer shield." I got some hits when I searched for that, but you would have to check which one is suitable.
The microcontroller boards are in the $30 to $75 range depending on the processor power. A speech synthesizer chip alone costs $25, so the shield, if you can find one is going to be maybe twice that.
One of the advantages of microcontrollers is that they can be used again just by reprogramming. This is an advantage for researchers.
I am an electrical engineer. I programmed my whole career, especially for control of industrial plants up until about ten years ago when I went into management, where I hit my Peter Principle job, the first job where you are completely incompetent. I am amazed at the power of these small computers. When the automobile companies tell you that their car has twenty computers in the car this is what they are referring to.
"One of the painful things about our time is that those who feel certainty are stupid, and those with any imagination and understanding are filled with doubt and indecision." -- Bertrand Russell

Merkin sir, you are a gent. thank you very much.
I was looking at the visonic sp3 recording and playback module using a pressure pad as a momentary switch, I was hoping I could make something along those lines. (pads I can make with aluminium and gaffer....nearly)
But a single chip on a circuit may be worth looking at.
Again thank you
( please excuse me while I deal with the others...)
