I don't know any actual scioentists that use pocket protectors. I know plenty with ink stains all over their shirts (I am one) but the only people I have seen using the protectors are wanker grad students, many of whom cannot pass their qualifiers

I have to agree.

I went to a geek school, and the only people these days that use pocket protectors are old-timer geeks (usually professors that look borderline homeless).

Borderline homeless, perhaps, but we still wear white shirts, ties and jackets even in the shop. Also I would use a different term than "old-timer", "vintage" or "venerable" seems a better fit. And, you would be amazed (probably) how useful a "deci-log-trig-trig" slide rule can be when you are in the basement having run out of batteries and need to compute the dimensions for a compound angle cut. It is all the more handy in its belt-clip scabbard.

The new gadgets are great and I use them a lot, but the old ones are not completely obsolete. I still use fire, iron and wheels occasionally.
I admit, as I get older, it becomes more difficult to remember what some of the new doodads ARE. I have forgotten the instructions for using my ipod.
