Sure thing, Sam. This will be our last member question, then I'll follow up with a final query from myself:
FROM: Hydrofly
I wan't to know what are sam's views of theists whose convictions(more like delusion) are so strong that they're willing to fight wars, sacrifice themselves and kill each other just for the sake of a god that does not exist.

Question for Sam Harris:
Do you think that a President of the United States would be wise to publicly attack the truth-value of Islam in the way that you do?

I think that the scariest thing is that most of them are just like us -- that is, not mentally ill, not especially stupid, not sociopaths, etc. That is what is so frightening about religion--it allows normal people to believe by the millions what only lunatics or idiots could believe on their own.

Sam, once again I can't thank you enough for joining us here tonight. It was a treat, as was Letter to a Christian Nation. And The End of Faith for that matter. :)
My final question:
What can regular, average American atheists like us do to fight the good fight?

Obviously no, unless he does the same with Christianity and Judaism.

I thank you on behalf of our members for being here. It was a real pleasure. Hope we can do this again soon, as your schedule permits.
You are welcome to post here any time. Consider us your friends.
Sincerely,

One of the most irrational of all the conventions of modern society is the one to the effect that religious opinions should be respected....That they should have this immunity is an outrage. There is nothing in religious ideas, as a class, to lift them above other ideas. On the contrary, they are always dubious and often quite silly.

I think we all just have to try to make sense in as public a way as possible. This will take many forms -- blogging, writing letters to the editor (this is important), teaching, etc. We just have to make incremental steps in the public disclosure of our quite reasonable doubts about God. The problem is that people are generally under the impression that this cannot/should not be done. So we have to remove that impression in any way we can (which doesn't get people killed or make atheism look worse than religious dogmatism). I think we are doing it, but whether we are doing it fast enough it an open question. Still, the fact that the covers of both TIME and Newsweek are devoted to the issue this week is worth noting. Atheism seems to be having a new moment...
Thank you all for your efforts. It's been a pleasure chatting with you. I wish you all the best.
Sam

P.S. You have all now certainly discovered a fact that was, until this moment, known only to myself: I am a slow and terrible typist.
Best,
Sam

I'll keep that to myself along with all my other deep dark secrets. Best of luck to you in the future as well.
