Because string theory's so useful.

I was talking about physics, not mathematics.

Physicists doing bad philosophy: You get convoluted theories that only other physicists and philosophers have heard of.

Philosopher doing bad physics: You get horrendous piles of shit such as What the *Bleep* Do We Know (apparently not actual physics).

Not actual philosophy either, unless you count these people. And possibly not actual filmmaking.

the root of the matter is this: even when philosophy is done right it may still be a steaming pile of worthless francis.

May, I suppose. It's more likely to be wrong, but in a useful way.

BTW, that mathematics and physics thing? That argument is from Karl Popper.

That's the philosopher, Karl Popper.

That one. It's a testability argument.

I don't need some philosopher to tell me that shit you can't test isn't physics. What is that anyway, argument from the bleedin' obvious?

Speaking of which, I read that physicists (though not philosophers) in Jolly Old have recently come up with (at least one) testable component of string theory.

Maybe one of you eggheads can sort it all out for the rabble.

when you have an infinite number of theories that's bound to happen sooner or later. I hope it's true [I've heard nothing about it], but I suspect that it will turn out to be a tsetable aspect that applies to thousands of theories. Still, if they can cut out some of the bullshit that's still progress. It won't really do them much good though until experiment can actually guide the theorists. Right now they can doi whatever they like, and they do.

Clearly some physicists do though.
