I was worried for a minute. But now I see that Steve is right. You just don't see reality here anymore. I will not argue with you any further.
You have become caricatures. Everyone (and that includes me) who stays here too long becomes coarser and meaner.
This thread has been instructive in a way that was as unanticipated, as it is welcome. I now understand that this is an echo chamber for the like-minded. Have at it.

To be fair, Lily, I did point out the futility of your continued presence here:

You chose to ignore me, but the point remains.

I'm sorry Lily, I don't understand. Would you care to elaborate?

Method, if you see the link I posted I compared Lily to Mussolini. I somehow don't think her rewards were entirely genuine.

Everyone does have a fair chance, although that is not the ideal way to put it, I don't suppose. If one's psyche is so damaged that it is not possible for one to recognize right and wrong, there can be no culpability. You (all) seem to have a notion of God that makes him little more than an ill-tempered curmudgeon of limited imagination and intelligence. Think big. Very big. Better, smarter, wiser, more compassionate, more attune to the complexities of the human condition than even, even... Richard Dawkins!
|
The problem is that such a god is not the god defined by Christianity, even the Roman Catholic form of Christianity. This is a deistic god, not a theistic god you are describing.
|
You are simply mistaken. I strongly suggest that you pick up the Catechism of the Catholic Church, if you want a hint of who the God we believe in is. It's heavy reading, but believe or not, you'll be far better informed about the nature and understanding of the God of Christianity.
|
I might as well elaborate on this. I find the "mysterious ways" god and the "interventionist" god inherently contradictory. And here is an example of some of the problems with this "Mysterious Ways" approach.
Lets say I was a psychopath. I find this evidence that I was born one (our brains were hardwired differently). I conclude that god made me this way. I happen to be one of the minority violent psychopaths. I decide to start killing people. Yes, I know that the bible says that killing is wrong, but I conclude that since god made me a killer, I am serving a greater cause for killing them. After all, I was created to be a killer. For all I know I'm just following god's will. Maybe my next victim would have become a world leader and starts a genocide against others.
You see, under the "Mysterious Ways" approach, you can justify any negative action. Even the apocalypse. Many fundies think that the destruction of the human race is a good thing.

OK, about those curious mannequin limbs I saw at the Our Lady of Fatima shrine in Portugal, I could find only one reference to them in the vast World Wide Web! And I'm truly perplexed by that, because the sight of those limbs at Fatima left an indelible impression on me, yet I couldn't find one image of them on the Internet. I'll have to rifle through my old photographs to see if I snapped any images of those things myself.
Anyway, the one reference to them was on what I gather is a New Zealand TV travel site, tv.nz.co.nz, in a Web article titled "Avoiding the crowds at Fatima." See here:
http://tvnz.co.nz/view/news_travel_story_skin/481188
And I'll lift the pertinent part of the article and post it here:
Quote:
The only visible commerce came from a bookstore and religious goods store on the grounds, both operated by a couple of the nearly 80 religious orders that have seminaries and convents in the village.
Both stores were empty when I entered. Except for wax body parts, for purchase by people diagnosed with various injuries and conditions,* many of the items in the store were simple and inexpensive, such as an $1 embroidered relic of the three shepherd children.
|
* bolding mine
So they were made of wax and not mannequin material (Whatever the heck that would be. Plastic? Fiberglass?), but it would seem that those curious items do have a purpose beyond being idle souvenirs. Of what use they would be to "people diagnosed with various injuries" is anybody's guess. The point is, they do sell them at Fatima. Why oh why didn't I buy one when I had the chance? Too creepy, I guess.
As an aside, when I visited the Our Lady of Guadalupe shrine in Mexico City, there were street vendors selling porn right across the street from the shrine entrance. No one seemed particularly bothered by this, which made me admire the Mexicans for their apparent nonchalant attitude.

Hmm, perhaps little candles to act as prayer aids? As the first poster so eloquently points out... Catholics aren't superstitious! Not at all! nope.

During a lunch break from praying, I went to one of the kiosks selling religious souvenirs. I dug through a bin of wax body parts--livers, kidneys, eyes, ears, and legs and found what I was looking for: a pair of breasts. I bought three pairs. Before the trip, I had found out that three of my aunts had breast cancer.
I stood in front of a stone altar and a perpetually burning fire fueled by the candles, fragrant oils, and wax body parts that loved ones left. I wasn’t sure if I believed in it, but I tossed the wax breasts into the pit. I stood among the other pilgrims, and asked God, if it was his will, to cure my aunts of breast cancer, to let my aunts live. My prayers rose and evaporated into gray smoke.

And there you go! You buy the wax part that ails you or a loved one and toss it into the flame while you pray.
