Here is how my news went.

Me: I am and atheist.
Mom: Why are you an atheist? *looks at me like I'm crazy*
Me: Cause religion is just too irrational.
Mom: So now you think you know everything just because you read Darwin?
Me: :wall:

yeah, is that a joke or do we have a new potential assclown?

I couldn't pick a single worst patronizing statement.

On another note, I will say that it's kinda funny to me how members of my family have tried to test my position. They're all gung-ho and enthusiastic about it--having learned a new irrefutable argument proving God's existence in Sunday School last week--and when I demolish it in a few short and simple words, they quickly change the subject.

The most mindboggling response I got was from by dad.

Dad: "no your not"
Me: "umm yes I am"
Dad: "no your not"
Me: "I'm so not having this conversation >.<

The following christmas he sent me a bible, with my name spelled wrong on the front. :P go dad

I've heard most of what people have posted, from atheism being a "phase" I'm in to blaming my atheism on philosophy (even though i was an atheist before I went to college). My absolute favorite though is from christmas my soph year in college:

Mom: When I'm up in heaven, and I look down into hell and see you burning for all eternity, that will make me sad.
Rhino: Uhm, if you're able to be sad, would it actually be heaven? I mean, if you can get sad, could you get bored? Imagine living for eternity with nothing to do.
Mom: If you can't take anything seriously we just won't talk about it.

Wait just a minute-You expect me to believe-That all this misbehaving-Grew from one enchanted tree? And helpless to fight it-We should all be satisfied-With this magical explanation-For why the living die-And why it's hard to be a decent human being - David Bazan

My favorite is when folks tell me, "Something must have happened that made you become disillusioned with the church...or disappointed with God." I generally tell them, "No, I studied a lot of history, read the founding documents, traced their origins, and concluded that it's all a huge hoax." Then I write them out a list of books to read, which I'm just SURE they run out and buy, right?

I told my mom I'm an atheist and she said, "oh John, no you're not".
